Have you ever been to a fancy dress party ?

I admit I am not really a fan of dressing up. Every year we have World Book Day and staff and children dress up as a character from a book …..I can just about cope with that …. The landlord at our local pub …..where we go on a Saturday evening and where The Mister tends the fire, had a punk theme Birthday party a couple of years ago. I had to borrow things but I did dress up then…… So, that got me wondering …..do you go to fancy dress parties and if so, who do you go as ?

We've been to a few but mostly dislike them. The last one we hired costumes. I'll add a photo.

'Fancy dress' means the same to you as to me - but not to most of the people who have responded so far I see!

@Fleura My jaw dropped open too. The US 'fancy dress' would be called 'formal dress' here.

Nope, no fancy dress up party or occasion unless you count my grandsons wedding last year.

I went to one where I had to wear a fancy dress, but not one that involved a costume, or was themed. I’d kind of like to dress up for a 90s party. I’d do really well at picking something out for that.

I am also not a fan of dressing up, but I had to in the past when I worked with my husband and we were invited by his clients. We often tried to invent excuses not to accept an invitation to a party, but there were times we could not say no.

I'm imagining those were not 'fancy dress' parties in the way that we understand them!

@Fleura May be not, I suppose you intend a "costume party". I went to those when I was a lot younger.

Yes lots. But they all had a theme, thankfully, otherwise I would never be able to come up with anything. And I have always managed to cobble something together from what I have with maybe a charity shop find or two. Buying or hiring a costume seems like cheating!

Is that because you don’t like dressing up ?

Yes, I've been invited to some fancy party. Also, been to some office events that required me to clean up and suit up formally.

When I was younger, I enjoyed dressing up but no longer. I haven't been invited to a party in about 15 years.
