Water and drain problems

When I was washing dishes in the kitchen sink today I noticed that the water would accumulate and once I turned it off it would drain but very slowly. I took a drain snake and put it into the drain to see if it would bring anything up. There was a tiny amount of slimy gunk that came out but that was it. The issue still remains. I wonder if the clog is somewhere deeper.
I thought of trying to use a plunger, but the only one I have at home is the one I used to use for the toilet. No way am I putting that into the sink.
I found something online that said you can try unclogging the sink by using vinegar, baking soda, and hot water. I wonder if that’s a good idea or a bad one.
There was also a suggestion of disconnecting some of the pipes and seeing if the blockage is there, but I’m afraid to do that because I don’t want to damage anything.
The last thing I want to do is to call a plumber. Any suggestions on how to try to unclog the kitchen sink?
Aside from the clogged kitchen sink, there is no hot water in the house. I was taking a shower in cold water today and some days prior to that. I went to the HVAC room to look at the water heater. Usually there’s a light that blinks. There’s nothing blinking on it today. And the floor next to the water heater seemed to be a little damp though there was no puddle there.
I wonder if that means that the pilot light is out or if there is a more serious issue. The last thing I wanna do is to need to replace the water heater. Maybe all that needs to be done is for the pilot light to be relit but I don’t feel comfortable doing that myself. I don’t know what to do.

The baking soda and viniger is a good way to unclocg a drain. We also use draino, too. Just pour some down the drain and flush with hot water after about half an hour. In this case, since your hot water isn't working you can always boil some on the stove to flush it out.
As for the hot water heater, I don't know much about gas or propaine ones, but I'd assume it'd have a way to let you know if there was something wrong with the pilot light. Before calling a plumber, you can see if your ex, or someone you trust, can come and help.

My realtor is probably going to come tomorrow and if he does, I will ask him to take a look at the water heater.

@lovebuglena That's good. I'm sure he won't mind.

@kaylachan He came with a friend that looked at it. The guy tried to relight the pilot but it didn’t work. Said to call someone else that deals with water heaters to come and look. Could be we need to replace a part or maybe the water heater is in need of replacement. We did it in 2017 it seems. My mom called the expert and he’s coming in the evening to look at it.

@lovebuglena An idea that goes with boiling water down the drain: if possible put a lid over the drain to hold the heat in.

@sallypup I wonder if my sink came with the drain cover because I haven’t seen it in the kitchen.

The baking soda and vinegar is probably OK. I use Drano. Just follow the directions on the bottle. As far as the water heater goes the pilot light could be out. Unless there is someone that you know that could come and take a look at it, you probably need to call a plumber.

@LindaOHio we thought the people that were replacing the water heater would also put the wall back but they don’t do that. Now we have to hire a different guy for that which means more money.
