What is the most ridiculous medical bill with which you’ve ever been stuck?

I was talking to another Mylotter yesterday, and it brought up the memory of the time I was sent a bill I couldn’t believe my insurance hadn’t paid. A few weeks before my mom died, I broke my ankle. For two weeks I hobbled around with a black and blue foot and ankle before I went into the doctor for something else, and she saw my ankle. After getting X-rays she quickly told me if I didn’t get off my ankle I was going to do permanent damage. So, I went to an orthopedist and he put me in a boot. That was in April. That December, I got a bill that surprised me. The insurance refused to pay the $397 for the boot because they didn’t deem it a “medical necessity”. Apparently, they expected me to sit on my rear for 8 weeks and crawl to the bathroom. I was aghast. That’s over a third of my monthly income. So, I called the the company, and just got a poor girl who apparently was experiencing a glitch in her head because she just kept repeating, “Like, you have to pay it.” I asked to talk to someone else, and got someone who told me the company forgives debts like this if your income is low enough. So I sent them a copy of my disability letter, and the debt was forgiven. What was the silliest medical bill you got? I understand a lot of you have universal healthcare, but surely you’ve had to pay an outrageous price for some kind of something related to your health…

I am so glad you could fix this problem and do not have to pay such an outrageous price. We paid an outrageous price for the mandatory health insurance in Switzerland, but at least all bills (except the dentists) were paid by the insurance.

So everyone in Switzerland has to to pay out of pocket for dental bills? My insurance doesn’t cover it either.

@AmbiePam - You can add an insurance for dental bill, but it's so expensive that most people take the chance.

@AmbiePam Thanks, speaking of medical bills though I have been messaging with the doctor'wms office which is thru a health system..They have something on there you could be billed 45 dollars..for messages on there. I was just sitting here thinking what if II was being billed 45 dollars for each of these messages? OMG..That better not happen.

Fortunately none in my family has any physical or medical problem. None of us has got injured either. The last time I had to visit doctors were seven years ago when my younger sister had a severe stomachache. Doctors conducted various tests, prescribed many medicines, but nothing worked. Finally a old lady living a little away from our house prescribed some herbs. She administered those herbs to my sister and what happened was a miracle. The stomachache of my sister disappeared and for last seven years she is very well. The old lady succumbed to old age.

@AmbiePam Of course, he was very experienced and had a very good knowledge of the medicinal qualities of herbs.

That is crazy for sure....wow. Sorry to hear that happened. I did have a crazy expensive ER visit when we first moved back to my home state, before we got approved for medicaid. It was over $1000 I think. We got on a payment schedule to pay it back through the bank...25 dollars a month for years! Otherwise, that is all I can think of.

Same here. Last year when I fractured my foot and saw a podiatrist, he put me in a boot. I didn't know to ask about the cost as I assumed that health insurance would pay for it. They didn't. They claimed "Durable Medical Equipment" wasn't covered or some such nonsense. I, like you, ended up with something like a $400 bill for it. I really resented it! Especially since two weeks later the podiatrist said I could buy Hoka tennis shoes and achieve the same thing.

@AmbiePam And now the orthopedist wants me to get this "cream" from a Compound Pharmacy and health insurance doesn't cover it. It's $30 for a tube. I can get BenGay over-the-counter for $7!

I am glad that you didn’t have to pay it. I am waiting to see what I will owe on my two heart surgeries and rehab. Insurance hasn’t finalized yet. The invoices show that it cost a fortune.

It's ridiculous how much insurance companies get to say about our care.

When the billing department wants me to pay the full fee even if I already gave them the insurance information that will pay them. Apparently it was a new staff

When we lived 6 hours from the capital we applied for travelling money for taking our son to a specialist, to whom we'd been referred. They said we should have taken him to the nearest specialist which was Bunbury and about 20 miles closer! We had fun writing them a scathing, sarcastic letter and got paid but we don't know which city they based it on.
