Happy 84th birthday, Sir Paul!! I figure there’s three or four generations of people on myLot, and Paul’s been making music for all of them!! To celebrate today I have a song that I had to omit from the top ten, and one of the things you’d probably never expect out of Paul. So with a hearty “Linda? NO!!!!!!!” warning (trust me!), here’s today’s song.
Sally G (Wings)
And if you doubt me, Linda, note the screen grab of Paul with Chet Atkins. Yes, this song is country.
I never thought to ask her what the letter G stood for
But I know for sure it wasn’t good
Now THAT is a line.
Yes, Paul McCartney made a country song. (Not his only one, you should hear “Country Dreamer,” the B-side of “Helen Wheels”!) Paul and Linda and the kids had a vacation in Nashville in June 1974, visiting the Grand Ole Opry (I was there the night Roy Acuff introduced him!) and recording a couple of songs. One was the straight-ahead rocker “Junior’s Farm,” a tribute to the family host for the holiday, Curly Putman. The other said was this, complete with steel guitar by the legendary Lloyd Green and fiddles by Johnny Gimble and Vassar Clemens.
Just so you know it’s country, Paul name dropped one of the big tourist spots at the time, Printer’s Alley, AND mentioned Hank Snow’s hit “A Tangled Mind” as the song the titular character sang.
I love this song. As I said earlier, only ten spots in the top ten, though, but it wasn’t about to be left off this month’s celebration.
