She Is Doing All The Wrong Things

We have a server we like and have seen her a lot over the years. She has been waitressing at the same steakhouse for 24 years. I’d guess she makes very good tips because she’s very good
By now we know virtually her whole life story.
She lives in Section Eight Housing ( that’s low income housing where you pay according to what you can afford/your income). She has a nice townhouse. Let’s be clear that I am NOT making any judgment about low income housing
Here’s what I am making judgment about. She’s moved her boyfriend in. You’re not supposed to do that. It’s against the rules. She told us the other day that she can’t cash a winning $2,000 scratch off lottery ticket in her own name because she owes state or federal taxes so she gets her boyfriend to cash her tickets
My problem is that she’s acting like a victim of circumstance but not obeying the rules. For instance, pay your taxes instead of buying lottery tickets.
There are people who really need those low income apartments. She now has two incomes with her boyfriend staying there
I just just wish people would do the right thing

I am with you on this. She may be a nice person but she is not doing the right thing.

Just a little clarification about Section 8: they factor in your income, medical bills, and any kids and childcare you have before deciding how much of your own rent you will pay. Those may have nothing to do with her, I just wanted people reading your post to get the full idea.
I’ve never met someone who made a good living be on section 8. A lot of them have jobs, sure, but a good living? That’s amazing. I also thought the government took back taxes out of your checks. That’s puzzling to me. I don’t know how people function with that hanging over their heads.

@LooeyVille She’s playing a dangerous game. If you’re found to be in violation they’ll kick you off quickly.

Totally agree with you. Imagine if suddenly everyone was breaking rules left and right there would be no sense of order of any kind,

@looeyville Don’t get me started. Governments wouldn’t need to raise so much tax if everyone played fair.

I have no way of knowing of course, but I am betting that many of her cash tips are never reported. Or she just reports part of them.
An older lady I know moved her boyfriend in to her section 8 apartment. They went to the office and said they were willing to pay more rent, and worked it out somehow. His apartment house was bought by someone and is going under a huge remodel which will take a long time. He couldn't find another apartment (not surprising here) but they let him live with her and charged extra.

Unfortunately we have all known people like that. And liked them, but also have seen all the negative behaviors and attitudes that make up generational poverty and need for support. At some point she likely will get caught.

She deserves whatever happens really, doesn't she? She certainly shouldn't be complaining.

I know what you mean since one self help speaker mentioned that is better to be free than spending time behind bars for breaking tax laws.
