Dental appointment may be my last

I have an appointment for dental cleaning next Monday. I got a call from the office telling me that my insurance is inactive. I told the lady that I was on my husband‘s insurance and he must have taken me off it. She asked me if I have any other insurance. I told her the name of my insurance and she told me they do not accept it. I think that’s because they do not accept any insurance through Medicaid and only accept insurance you get through your employer. I asked her how much it is going to cost if I pay out of pocket. She told me $150 if I just did the cleaning. If I also do an exam it’s gonna be $195. I told her I will keep the appointment and just do the cleaning. I have a lot of black stains on my teeth and I want them gone. I usually do cleaning every four months because of that. I paid $150 last time as well but I think I was still on my husband’s insurance because a reimbursement check came for $40. Of course I could not deposit the check because it was made out to him as he is the insurance holder. I had to forfeit that money as I didn’t want to contact him about it or deal with him coming over to bring me the money and take the check. If he did remove me from his insurance, he should’ve told me about it. Though in the end it wouldn’t have made a difference because as his insurance is out of network I pay upfront for my visit and then get reimbursed, if I qualify. I wouldn’t be able to get my reimbursement anyway without involving him. It really sucks that my insurance is not accepted by the dentist. I really don’t want to search for another dental office or switch to a new one. But I can’t keep paying out of pocket for everything. Just cleaning is one thing, but if you also have to do x-rays and have the dentist look at your teeth, or if there are some other issues to deal with it becomes even more expensive. This may be my last dental appointment at this office… Not just because it doesn’t take my insurance but because I may live even further away from it than I do now.

It would be nice if he had let you know. I hope you can find another dentist without any problems. We have a place here called Terry Reily that takes Medicaid and is a good one. We are lucky. It's only a couple blocks away too.

Thank you. I bet it won’t be easy to find a dentist that takes my insurance. And then who knows if I will have the same insurance next year. I don’t want to keep switching dentists.

Hopefully everything goes well. It's not always easy to have to deal with insurance and such.

Good luck getting it all resolved. But $150 is worth it for a decent cleaning.

If you can easily afford it, it’s not a big deal. But it is better if you have insurance to cover it.

If my insurance is not accepted by my dentist or doctor, I will just have to change them. I can't be paying out for pocket for medical expenses when i have insurance that cover it

The downside is that even if you have insurance, you may still be required to pay out of pocket.

I don’t have dental insurance so I’ve had to pay out of pocket for awhile now. It’s ridiculous how much it costs.

I remember not long ago the dentist came to look at my teeth after my cleaning. I think she spoke to me for only a few minutes. And she glanced at my teeth for less than a minute. I don’t remember how much I was billed for that, but it was somewhere between $125-$200.

@AmbiePam it’s good to be the dentist but not the patient.

It's a pity he didn't let you know. That's very inconsiderate.

Either he took me off or maybe he no longer has that insurance at all. Either way he should’ve told me.
