Today's Visit With Mother-in-Law Went Pretty Well

Even though it was hotter-than-Hades outside, MIL really wanted to go out. So we took her to lunch to Chuy's where @FourWalls gave her a big old hug and asked her how she was doing. She had kept asking me, "Is your friend going to be here?" because she remembered that we always see @FourWalls at Chuy's. I was happy to see that she remembered that. She keeps telling the story that her shower didn't work for three months and she wasn't able to take a shower for three months because the shower didn't work/no water came out and the maintenance men lost her work order. None of that is true. But she had a fun day out, so that's all that matters. I always post something pink with posts about mother-in-law because her favorite color is pink.

It was great to see her! And you!! AND Hubby!!! I wanted to make sure that I asked her permission to hug her because you never know with a dementia patient if she might think I was trying to attack her or something, or even if she remembered at 11:45 who she’d asked about at 11:30. She’s looking good, and so are you! Thanks again for the lunch card!

Dementia patients often get stuck on one fabricated thing they are convinced is true--like your MIL shoes, and people stealing things from her when they aren't, and now the shower thing. I know it's so tiring, there's nothing you can do to convince her otherwise. The ex's grandfather that we helped care for did the same. He swore he had thousands of dollars in cash in his bible and it was gone. That wasn't true, when he said that he had been in memory care for over a year and had no access to cash. He also declared that he was the only resident that didn't have a private ice cream machine in his room. Where he came up with that one, we never did figure out--of course, no one had that. I mean, he did love ice cream, but no one had an ice cream machine in their room.
