They must think this is normal!

I’m sure my girls are growing up thinking that whatever they want will just turn up, just like that! A few weeks ago Little One was reorganising her bedroom and wanted taller bookshelves now that’s she’s also taller. In a couple of days I had two bookcases I was kindly given through Freegle in the garage waiting for her to sort her things out. Each of those would have been between £80 and £150 to buy new. Then we decided that Big One could have a double bed, and a day or two later a really nice black metal bed, sort of Gothic style, was offered on Freegle. I was kindly given it, we brought it home (with the mattress tied on to the car roof!) and now it’s installed and she’s sitting pretty in that looking like a queen! To buy new that would have been at least £100 plus the mattress. Not long after that she mentioned that she was thinking of buying a drawing table, one of those that you can tilt up at various angles. Well, funnily enough someone had been offering exactly that on Freegle for a couple of weeks already. I wasn’t sure if it was still available or if they had just forgotten to take down the post, but yes it turned out it was still there and they were so keen to get rid of it they even brought it round for us straight away! The exact same thing is £99.99 new. A week or two ago our Italian lodger was cooking and she remarked that she preferred using one of those curved herb cutters to chop herbs, rather than a knife. Years ago, before we moved to this city, we lived in a rural area, and the city close to us had a thriving freecycle community. Like you, I gave many items and received many items. My son was a teenager at the time, and he knew quite well the savings that those items that I received meant for our household, as well as the savings it represented to the receivers of my offerings. And that is not to mention how items were spared from making their way to the municipal dumps, thus helping our environment. You have done quite well as of late. The summer before he went away to university, I was able to outfit him with 2 complete sets of 4 dishes, a collection of glassware, even a working coffee maker. All saved from the landfill.

@Fleura My most precious received items are a big stainless steel soup pan, which gets alot of use, as well as an antique set of Christmas dishes, complete with glassware, which have had a couple of decades of use from my family alone.

@Juliaacv There are certainly some lovely things offered. You wonder what would happen to them otherwise.

It's amazing isn't it? I'm a keen Freegler. I have given and received literally thousands of things since I joined soon after the local group started in 2003.

I have actually had things like that happen to me at my other house. Only for me it was things showing up in my yard. Like a $110 wrist watch under a shrub.

I love that you find such great treasures! Although, I’d be a little scared to use a mattress from a stranger. I was given a free Queen mattress once because an older couple we knew didn’t like the mattress they’d had for just a month. They gave it to me, and it served me well for ten years before it started hurting my back. But then, you’ve got eyes. You can see if something is on it or in it. Plus, you can always vacuum it with an attachment. And, I kind of think you have a little magic in you to be able to find these things so easily!

I realised when we went to collect the bed that we did actually know the people slightly, they go to the same music sessions and are friends with Big One's friend. But of course even with people you know, you never really know what their housekeeping is like, it can be quite a shock! That reminds me of something, actually...

No, thankfully. Although she is a bit clumsy, that's why she prefers a chopper to a knife.

That's amazing but what a wonderful website. Those were great finds. I was going to say 'great buys' but of course they were free. Our free-type site mostly has children's gear but it's all good. We have a similar chopper and I get a lot of use from it.

'They' say that if you get something for free you don't value it, but I don't think that's true.

I know! They don't know how lucky they are. But at least they are not the kind that think they have to have brand new everything all the time.
