King Charles wishes us a happy rebellion day.
Happy 250th birthday, America. To celebrate, I’m going over to the jukebox and play a song…by an Irish band.
Here’s today’s song.
The Boys Are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy
At lest I got to see these guys live!!! Thin Lizzy was part of my second-ever rock concert, Summer Jam II, in 1978. They were easily the best band that day.
This was far and away their biggest hit in the United States. And, yes, they did do other songs. “Jailbreak,” the title song from the album that gave us this, still gets FM rock airplay. There’s “Whiskey in the Jar” and “Cowboy Song” (I love the notion of a black Irish guy singing about being an American cowboy!), too.
Frontman Phil Lynott couldn’t beat that addiction problem he had, and it took his life at the young age of 36. (Guitarist Gary Moore had a similar problem, dying at 58 from an alcohol-induced heart attack.) Now people recognize how good they were. But, as Joni Mitchell famously said, it always seems to go that we don’t know what we have until it’s gone.
The Boys Are Back in Town
Written by Phil Lynott
Recorded by Thin Lizzy
From Jailbreak, 1976

Now I've got to listen to my copy of Live and Dangerous. And Gary doesn't even play on that one, it's still good!

I was lucky, he’d rejoined them on that tour because Brian Robertson had quit due to injury.

@FourWalls - That must have been something. I saw Gary in Stuttgart. He was great!

This is a great song! And Joni Mitchell did indeed say a pure truth.

One of the best quotes you’ll find in a song, that’s for certain.
And yes, this is a killer song!

That’s good enough. I’m listening to the fireworks still going off. Sheesh, you’d think this country was 250 years old or something.

And it’s so deceptive. Nobody wakes up and says, “Hey, think I’ll become a heroin addict today.”
