Are You a Morning Person?

Some people are naturally early risers, and some people are naturally night owls. I'm a night owl by nature, but because of work requirements I am forced to be an early riser. But I'm not a morning person by any means. So, when I get up early in the morning, I struggle to function until my coffee kicks in.
I saw a tweet on X recently that summed me up perfectly in the morning:
"I admire people who get up, have breakfast and shower in 30 minutes. I need 30 minutes just to figure out where I am and who I am."
Yes, I am often in a daze early in the morning. And sometimes, when I get to work, co-workers will have conversations with me that I have no recollection of. My brain just hasn't started functioning yet.
How about you? Are you a morning person? Or are you more of a night owl?

Me too! I’d sleep all day if I could. And interestingly, even though I have to get up super early in the morning, I still go to bed really late at night!

I am not a morning person and never have been. Yes, most mornings I have to get up and I have to function but like you, it takes both time and coffee!

I use to have a major dilemma in the mornings: I couldn’t function until I had coffee, but I couldn’t make the coffee because I couldn’t function! Thank God most coffee makers now have preset timers on them!

I used to set the timer on mine. But since sleep is often elusive here, and I tend to sleep when the son sleeps, I just get my coffeepot completely ready every night, loaded with fresh coffee, water, etc. and when I know I'm up to stay up, I push the button! The struggle is real....gotta be awake enough to make the coffee!
More and more I am completely convinced you are my brother from another mother.

Even though I have to get up early in the morning, I still stay up late at night, which probably explains why I am so tired in the mornings.

@moffittjc Yeah, I would definitely think that doesn't help.

@dodo19 That's the problem with being a night owl and having to get up early for work. The two are at constant odds with each other.

I'm a hundred percent with you on that. Even though I get up at 5:30am every morning for work, it's not unusual for me to stay up until 1 or 2 in the morning. I just don't get tired at night, that's when I seem to be the most energetic.

@moffittjc I usually go to bed between 11 and midnight anymore. But I don't get up until after 8. That fits my body great

@wolfgirl569 Sounds like you got a pretty good routine. I usually go to be around 1 or 2 in the morning, and somehow still manage to get up for work in the morning. And even on weekends I don't usually sleep late. But, with that said, I am definitely not a morning person even if I wake up early!

I usually go to sleep late and I wake up late unless I have to go somewhere.

As much as I am a night owl, I've never been a late sleeper. Even if I only get 4-5 hours of sleep, I still wake up pretty early, even though I'm not a morning person. I make up for that lack of sleep with strategically placed naps throughout the day. lol

@lovebuglena I do my best napping at work! lol
A lot of times I will shut the door to my office and put my head down and take a quick power nap. Other times I will go out and sit in my truck on my lunch break and take a nap there (when the weather is cooler).

I only get up early in the morning when I have to go to the doctor's office.

You should make doctor's appointments for later in the day so you can sleep in late!

@Deepizzaguy Although I will admit I like early morning appointments because as the day goes on, the doctor's office gets backed up and people end up waiting longer periods of time to be seen.

I would say so. I think I am at my best in the morning, but I still take my time getting going.

MORGENMUFFEL!!!!!!! I even have a t-shirt that says that. It’s German for “morning grouch.”

I need a shirt like that! Although I'm not really a grouch in the morning, it's more like I'm in a daze or something.

I am definitely a night owl. The way my mom put it, I was born at 11 AM, so close enough to noon and on a Friday so ready to party on the weekend.

That's funny about what your mom said!
I was born on a Friday too, but at 4:05pm. I wonder if the time we're born factors in to whether or not we're morning or night people? My daughter was also born at 4:05pm, and she's a night owl. My son was born at 9:00am, and he's a morning person.

I will say that I do my best napping in the afternoon, but that’s because I get up early and go to bed late!

Are you a coffee drinker?
I didn't start drinking coffee until I was in my mid-40s. I never felt the need for it before then. Although I have never been a morning person, I used to spring to life easily in the mornings, no matter how late I stayed up the night before. But I guess as I've gotten older my body can't quite function like it used to. Coffee is now mandatory for me in the mornings! lol

@JESSY3236 I can't stand black coffee! I have to mix lots of sugar and/or creamer in my coffee to make it tolerable to drink.
But, like you, I love the smell of coffee brewing in the morning!

@moffittjc no. my mother is. I tried black coffee, but I couldn't take the taste of it. I do like the smell of coffee though.

That is true. Farmers have to be up with the chickens to get all the morning chores done. Plus, it's advantageous to start early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day as much as possible.

I would say the one benefit of being a morning person is watching a beautiful sunrise (if you wake up early enough to catch it). I always stay up too late at night to catch morning sunrises.

I’m a morning person. You wake me up, and I’ll smile drowsily and tell you good morning. That doesn’t mean I can get up and go right away though. It takes me ten minutes to get dressed (with makeup), but it’ll be an hour before my medication fully kicks in. That arthritis has to get in check before I walk out the door. Still yet, I’m alert and chatty. My mom was also this way, but my sister and dad were bears until after 9am.

I'm a bear until I've eaten breakfast. Some people think I'm that way until I have coffee, but I'm in a daze-like slumber until I have coffee, and I'm a bear until I eat. lol
I found out not too long ago that I have arthritis in my knees, just like my dad did. I'm starting to feel it a little bit now, but it's not horrible enough where I need medication yet. But I know that day is coming, unless I bite the bullet and get my knees replaced. Keep my fingers crossed that I can go another decade or so before having to cross that road.

It takes a big cup of hot coffee to bring me back to reality in the morning!
