Free veterinary care in Luxor, Egypt

Occasionally in discussions I’ve mentioned ACE (Animal Care in Egypt). ACE was started by two English women who were visiting Luxor and found the conditions of working animals very confronting. Julie Wartenberg and her niece, Kim, set up simple but practical washing blocks where owners could wash their animals helping prevent some of the sores caused by dirt, dust and poorly fitted tack. The charity quickly expanded and a generous inheritance enabled the purchase of land and construction of a veterinary hospital. There is a walk-in clinic, a surgical hospital and 25 stables. Local and volunteer vets from abroad treat between 3,000 and 5,000 animals a month. No-one pays fees. Cats and dogs are neutered and spayed for free. Owners of horses and donkeys might be given padded nosebands to replace the chains so common there. Free care encourages owners to get help early. There is a strong emphasis on educating owners on animal welfare such as using well-filling harness. Four times a week, local school students come to the facility. They learn that animals feel pain and deserve respect. Such educational sessions are helping create lasting change. The equines in Luxor lead a very hard life but thanks to facilities like ACE, things are slowly improving. The photo is mine of donkeys in Ireland. I can’t find my Luxor photos. I think the animals were so thin and sad that I didn’t take any.

That's a really good think they are doing. We don't deserve animals.

The animals there were so thin. Donkeys being beaten with poly pipe. It was just awful. And they won't geld the jacks and stallions so there are always injuries from fights.

@JudyEv - That sounds terrible. Like the circus in places.

I pray ACE gets donations for their worthy efforts, care like that is very expensive but also needed in areas where people have no real funds to pay for the care of their beasts of burden.

That would have torn me up to see thin and sad animals like you said. Obviously, it really stuck with you too. I am so glad that place exists!

@JudyEv Good to hear an uplifting story. When we got home late last night two letters awaited my wife from a donkey sanctuary she visited once, It makes it easier to support such things when you can go and visit the place to see how the money is spent.

Glad there is care for working animals. The climate must be tough enough, never mind poor care

I am so glad that there are organizations like ACE to take care of the animals. It is so important to neuter and spay cats and dogs to prevent that too many become stray and have a terrible life. We still need to do a lot even in more civilized countries. Those who abuse or kill animals should go to jail.

That is such a worthwhile enterprise, I hope it will lead to a permanent change in behaviour. It isn't so long ago that animals were often badly treated in this country - that's why Anna Sewell wrote Black Beauty in 1877.
