Should you block people who annoy you ?

I have just read a post on a page on FB where a lady said her grown up children forget her Birthday and she doesn't say anything to them .Several people commented, including a lady who called her a doormat ! Obviously, this upset the lady who wrote the original post. She didn't feel that way, just wanted to keep the peace. Lots of people were saying she should block the person who called her a doormat. One lady proudly commented " I block everyone that annoys me or disagrees with me ". That got me thinking .... I am not a person who likes falling out and will try to talk to people if there is an issue. I know and accept that not everyone will agree about everything. I , however, do not think it particularly grown up or helpful or good for your mental health to simply block people who might have a different opinion to your own. Seems to me that's the sort of person who can't deal with things, can't accept there may be other ways of looking at things and is arrogant enough to think that they are always right about everything. Anyway, I would be interested in your thoughts .... Would you block this person ? Would you get into conversation to explain things ? Would you just scroll on by ?

I blocked a person who repeatedly sexually harassed me as I don’t mess with perverts, and then someone else who threatened to harass me, but otherwise I’d like to think we could work it out. I think the lack of maturity harassment shows makes working it out impossible as a line has already been crossed. That being said, I don’t know what else that person (the person you’re talking about) has going on in their life. They might be keeping a tenuous hold on their sanity, and that one thoughtless comment might really hit them hard. In that case, I wouldn’t blame them for blocking that person.

I think the sort of harassment you mention should be blocked straight away ...and reported if you can. I don't know anything about any of the lady's to be honest , this was just a post that came up today. Families are complicated things and there may well be more to it than just not getting Birthday cards .... It was the other lady's comment that interested me more ...about simply blocking those who disagree with her .... It's all well and good for her to block someone on a webpage but how does she cope in real life when she meets someone who disagrees with her .... How does she work through those situations I wonder !

I blocked someone who wouldn't quit sexually harassing me but just stop talking to people who annoy me deeply enough. (I usually ask if they meant their comment and decide what I'll do after they explain. One Filipino called me a bad word in Tagalog, not realizing I knew what the word meant. When I asked if she meant to say that, she told me to ignore it if I didn't like it. I blocked her.) One lady on myLot always wants to argue about anything I say to her so I stopped talking on her discussions and she stopped talking on mine. *shrug* It wasn't a big loss as far as I'm concerned. I'm allowed to have my own opinion about things. I would have deleted the comment if calling me a doormat was the nicest thing someone could think to call me and it actually bothered me. I'm glad you aren't getting harassed on myLot. GAA wasn't a lot of help when I was getting sexually harassed here. The GAA at the time would just tell the nasty person to leave me alone instead of following myLot policy and banning them. That let the person keep harassing me for months until the owner saw it and banned the person.

@Traceyjayne I've never been sexually harassed in real life, only online. And I don't NEED to deal with something like that online. I'd rather get rid of the person so I can continue to have fun because I'm on myLot to relax and enjoy myself. myLot is for me to talk with friends and nobody should interfere with that, in my opinion, of course. You're also assuming I wouldn't LIKE being sexually harassed in real life. I'd probably punch someone who did that in real life. Problem solved!

@DaddyEvil I'm certainly NOT assuming you would like to be sexually harassed in real life.....I'm just asking ....generally .....I know it's easy to block a problem online , but you can't do that in person , in real life, so how would you deal with things then !

No I'm not being harassed at all , anywhere. I did think folk might think the post was about me .....it's not I am surprised that so many folk just say block .... It's easy to do that on the internet but not in ' real life '. If you just block people how can you deal with the same thing in the spoken word !

Well, it doesn't matter if you block them or not, the question if what they post gives you peace or breathe new life to you, coz if it causes you mental stress I think it is better to just block them. I always think that me, unfollowing them or blocking them will not affect their followers or whatever they want to point out in their post everyday, so its okay to just unfollow and block them. The important thing is to protect myself from unwanted and unsolicited opinions that breaks me. If that lady was so affected by the negative comments that weighing her emotions down, it is okay just to block people who thinks know better.

@luisadannointed. What if someone said something about you that you didn't like ....but which was true ...would your blocking it simply make you, over time , less able to deal with these situations, removing yourself from the real world where sometimes the truth hurts but can help make you a better, stronger person ! ( Just a thought ).

@Traceyjayne if that's a friend that's okay and that's on private message, but if that person is calling you out of the blue in broad day light and it made you humiliated on social media that's a different thing. I am not a lose moral person to be called out in front of other people, strangers, whatever, there is always a perfect place for that. and I only give authority to those who I look up to, and know me really well, not on some bashers, or my so called friends. it is okay to be corrected, but correcting a friend is not in front of social media. that is not correction that is humiliation.

I don’t post anything personal online, so this isn’t really relevant to me. However, if you tend to block people who disagree with you, eventually you will end up blocking everyone. This is because we may think we have the same views as someone else, but there is always something that you disagree upon. If you then can’t agree to disagree, then the fatal ‘block” is instigated. The end!

I think you should, as adults, be able to agree to disagree yet still remain friends. Otherwise, like you say you will end up blocking everyone ! Also , isn't it healthy for the mind, soul, head, heart ....etc ....if you can talk about things you find you have different opinions about ....or you will just be sticking your head in the sand !

Depending on the circumstances, I would mostly just scroll past and/or ignore the person's comments.
