Do you have any organizations close to your heart?

Some of you have worked with great organizations, and one Mylotter sticks out in my mind as having driven patients to their cancer appointments. She’s modest so I won’t name her, just in case she doesn’t want me to, but I always thought that was so cool.
I tried to volunteer at a Boys and Girls Club and then at an animal shelter, and got turned down for my health. I understood the Boys and Girls Club, but I sure thought the animal shelter would let me do something. There are so many wonderful organizations, but the ones that always get me are animal charities, dementia charities, and women’s charities. There are so many types of dementia although I know most people just think of Alzheimer’s. Still, the world always needs more. There is a site I’d share a link to if I knew how on my phone, but you click on different sections and it donates to animal charities, women’s charities, rainforest action, breast cancer help, diabetes research…
Ate there any organizations close to your heart?

There isn't any one organization that I would say I'm close to. If I had to pick one it would be an animal shelter or charity. When my dad passed my mother requested donations to the first aid squad instead of flowers. They were the ones who got him on the beach and resucitated him 3 times on the way to the hospital.

@AmbiePam My sister wrote it. I was left out of most of the plans. Funny that she had to put my full name in there since no one knows my actual first name. I was allowed to pick the picture for the sympathy card.
I'm not religious but this was the best one I could find.

There's an organization in our city for stray dogs and I always support it. I may not have the time to visit the shelter but I make sure to donate making the shelter sustainable. It's privately owned so it's dependent on the organization's own money and solicitations.

I have a few. I have volunteered for Scouting (it used to be Boy Scouts, but now it's just Scouts). I also love Smile Train. My son was born with a cleft lip, and I love that they work to help kids with cleft lips and palates, with parents who couldn't otherwise afford the surgery. I once wrote my son's story for a book, and all of that book's proceeds went to Smile Train. I loved that I got to help new moms feel less alone while also helping raise money for a good charity. I wish I had that book when I found out about my son's lip. I also love our local Humane Society; I got all 3 of my cats from there.

@AmbiePam I was very fortunate that my son only had the cleft lip. He had one surgery, and that's all he needed, but I was reminded of how fortunate I was. I see kids going through countless surgeries, and we were fortunate enough to just have the one.

The one I currently am active with is Project Chemo Crochet. It's a Philly based organization that accepts crocheted granny squares and they have volunteers that put the blankets together for chemo patients. They started off very small but have grown considerably and more and more patients are getting blankets. I found this place by accident and have been making squares and sending them to them. I feel as if a small part of me is contributing to something so worth while. If I was closer to them I would volunteer to help put those blankets together,

@AmbiePam I'm happy to feel like I'm contributing to something. If my knees were better I'd probably volunteer at our nearby nursing home.

Autism Speaks has been one that has been close to my heart since I was in school. I nannied for a family who had a daughter who had Autism, and later got brain cancer.
Pediatric cancer organizations always tug at my heart streams. Also dog rescues.
so I guess there are a few.

I have done a lot of volunteer work over the years. I was a Candy Striper for nearly 3 years, and I loved it. Met so many incredible people. Other volunteer work I've done is of course years of animal rescue work and fostering, Vacation Bible School for many years, A Girl Scout leader for several years, sorting clothing for the Salvation Army, took charge of running the kitchen for my church and we produced a Wednesday night meal for many years, that charged only what people felt they could pay, or nothing if they didn't. Oddly, we always came out ahead. I do have to say that program is still in place today, I don't live there anymore or close to it, but I know people who still help with it.

I haven't been able to do much volunteering the past few years, as you know. However a friend of mine is in charge of a huge cancer drive every fall. They always want homemade items to sell, so I make some things for them to sell. In the summertime, there is a group of teens from a church here that holds several ''city-wide clean-up days'' which as you know, many cities appreciate. They pull weeds from sidewalks, pick up small trash around shrubs and bushes, trim weeds, etc. The last few years a dinner is always held for these volunteers, so I always try to cook something or bake something to take to that. What I am able to do now isn't much, but for the moment, it's all I've got.

Not any more but growing up I was in both the Latvian Girl Scouts and the next level up as a teen. The only time I volunteed was when I was going to universtity and I had lots of time between morning and afternoon classes and I was a volunteer at the nearby Brookly Hospital in the Delivery Ward,

ASPCA, The Salvation Army back at our old house, (I give them my VHS tapes and clothing sometimes) and the Church around here, any canned goods I never got to that haven’t expired go into a box and straight to them.
