Well Sarah Callazzo wasn't actually in one of my classes but I did coach her for field hockey. She was always smiling and funny. That year's team was a good group. They started calling me "Mom" and I was like WTF. Sarah even had a custom coffee mug made for me that said "#1 Mom", "#NJChicaa", and it had a picture of the 2 of us though I had my hands up covering my face.
Little did I know that she was suffering from an eating disorder--bulimia. She restricted herself, worked out obsessively, and would purge after eating or drinking alcohol. At the age of 19 (I think) she began her recovery/treatment journey.
She has written Unknown Warrior to share her experiences, thoughts, and inspiration. My favorite passage in the book is:
"When you reach a red light, you stop.
When your gas tank is empty, you fill it.
My car even alerts me when I'm swerving.
We yield to signs and honk to stop accidents.
So why do we ignore these same signals in our own lives when it comes to our bodies and minds?"
This book was published in 2024. Since then Sarah has started a national eating disorder hotline that you can even just text if you aren't comfortable actually speaking with someone. It is called "Love, A Stranger". She travels nationally delivering presentations about eating disorders and her experience.
She really is an incredible woman. You should read her story. I don't have an eating disorder but her wisdom really resonated with me. (and I'm not saying that just because I know her) The book is available on Amazon.
P.S. The painted body on the cover is a painting of Sarah's healthy body.

I knew a young lady when I was growing up who was bulimic. She always wore bulky sweaters to hide how "fat" she was. We could all see she was skin and bones but she always claimed she was overweight. Around the time I graduated from high school, she was hospitalized. I hope she got the help she needed.

That is an incredible story.
I feel like spectacular people seek each other out in this world, and that's why you received the mug from her.
Can you imagine being her age and being so focused and making such a positive out of such a life long disorder?
That is just beyond belief to me, her whole life lies ahead of her, and each speaking engagement that she does, means that she has shared her story with that many more people, and that must mean accountability in the back of her mind.
