No more surprises, please--unless they are good ones!

I won't get in too deep about today's list of crazy stuff. I just can't, until I get it all fixed, sorted, or whatever it takes. My children lost their grandmother today. Yes, she was very old and had lived a long life. We all loved her so much. My children were very close to her, if at all possible, she never missed a ball game, a school concert, play, or event of any kind, an awards ceremony, nothing...she was there, and wouldn't have been any place else had she been given a choice. She was a phenomenal mother figure that set a great example for everyone--a kind, Christian lady who loved her family. The kids are upset of course, their Dad (my former husband) is very rattled, and Grandpa is crushed beyond measure. Can you even imagine being married almost 75 years? That's more years than some of us are even blessed with. They lived for each other, their children, and their grandchildren. All four of my children have been texting and calling each other, me, and their Dad for most of the day. Even though we all knew Grandma was very frail and her days were numbered, imagining life without her is very, very hard. Grandpa isn't at all well and is extremely frail, he won't be with us much long, either. There was another event today that I am simply too tired to even talk about, nor do I have the heart to at this time. Let's just say it's difficult and might be easier to deal with on another day. We all have bad times and bad days; it's part of life. It does seem hard to have a lot of bad things happen in one day, though. The hardest thing for right now is, Grandpa isn't well enough to go to a service, or to travel by any means of car, plane, whatever, from Florida to Illinois to have a service here like they originally planned to do. They have cemetery plots, etc. in Southern Illinois next to their parents and other family. No one feels they can have any type of service for Grandma without Grandpa there. He just can't ride in a car more than a few miles, and he for sure can't fly. They both chose cremation long ago, so their sons think they may just wait for now. Grandpa even suggested that, so it may be what they have to do. We know we all won't be here some day. We know we will lose people we love. But somehow, it's still very hard when those days come.

I don't think you are ever really prepared to lose a loved one. Sorry about grandma.I know what you mean about not wanting to talk about certain things. Somethings are jyst too deoressibg, annoying or frustrating to talk about at the time

Sometimes, there are just things you can't talk about, or we have to sort it all out in our head first, or wait for one reason or another. Happens to all of us, I'm sure. Thank you, Snowy.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I hope the family figures out a solution, but it doesn't sound like that is likely to happen with Grandpa's condition. Hang in there. Tomorrow has to be better!

The only solution seems to be to wait, and as morbid as it sounds, bury their ashes at the same time after Grandpa passes. He's so frail no one can imagine he will make it much longer. He can no longer walk at all without falling, and he hates the wheelchair. He told my daughter he was ready to go, and he hoped that soon God was ready for him. He just cannot travel at all with the exception of having to go to medical things or to the hospital. The ex has him over often--but it requires two people to haul him around. One person can push the wheelchair, but it takes two people to lift him out of it and place him in the car, and then get him back out. And he is so tiny and frail now, they are afraid they will accidently hurt him while picking him up or putting him in the vehicle. Today was better. We are SOOOO thankful. Thank you!

@kareng At this point there isn't much to be done for Grandpa except keep his pain levels under control. He is so very frail and small--and he was a tall and fit guy his entire life. I can see how he won't know what to do without her...nearly 75 years of marriage is a lot of years!

I am very sorry for such sad news. I can imagine being married 75 years, it's hard enough for me, we were together 55 years and we were alone, we lived for each other. No matter the age, losing a family member is never easy.

No, it’s definitely not easy. It does help to know she did have a long good life and has a family that will all miss her. I know we will see her again someday.

@MarieCoyle - I know, I am sure that Giorgio will wait to see me join him one day. This is something we promised each other, wait for me.

I am not equipped for any more significant losses. Not after my mom and grandparents. I know they will come, but even if you think you can prepare, you really can’t. Those 93 years were well lived. I’m very glad you know you’ll see her again someday. Please feel free to talk to me about what else went wrong today.

No, you think you're ready but you're not. And no one ever wants any more losses like losing a friend or loved one.

So sorry to hear this. It could be better to wait. Or have a service for him and then a graveside one where she will be buried

There just doesn't seem to be any other way to get him there and get him back to Florida, even with lots of help. He can't stand to ride very far at all, it would literally take probably 5-6 days to drive from Florida to Illinois (which can be done in a day if needed, but it's a very long day!) and then they would have to reverse the trip...so like nearly 2 weeks. Nope, it's not feasible.

Yes, you are right, it's just life. But I can't write the end of her story with that line...or anyone's story. We are all special, and deserved to be remembered. Thank you.
