Good morning! Yes, I’m up early. There’s a family reunion today a little south of Fort Knox, so I’m going to pick up some gold and some food and head there. But first, we’ll head to New Orleans in song. Here’s today’s tune.
Life Is Just a Tire Swing - Jimmy Buffett
I think I only have three songs on this album that I haven’t used in a countdown yet. Gotta get to work on that.
I’ve mentioned before that side two of A1A is, start to finish, my favorite Jimmy Buffett collection. This is the final song on side one. (And the kids are going, “What’s side two?”
) Buffett takes the innocent life approach to growing up (as opposed to getting a “grown-up education” in “The Pascagoula Run,” later in his career).
Tire swings are a good part of my childhood memories, too. For those of you who’ve never had the privilege: it’s pretty much what it sounds like. A very sturdy rope thrown across a very sturdy tree branch, then tied to an old tire. Yes, you could get hurt on those things, but WOW they were fun. Nothing at the playground could touch it.
This is pretty much a song that speaks to all of us: the innocence of childhood until we “finally learn(ed) a lot about pain.”

Oddly, I don't remember tire swings being a thing where I grew up. I'm sure some kids had them, but nobody I hung around with did.
