Received my summer savings deposit

I have been obsessively checking the balance for my checking account this morning. The summer savings deposit has finally hit! People who don't respect teachers love to bash us for all sorts of things--salaries, benefits, unions, time off, etc. A favorite complaint is that we get paid for summers off. Um no. That's not how it works. My contract runs from September 1 through June 30. I do not get paid by the district for July or August. What I *do* get however is summer savings. We have the option to have 10% of each paycheck deducted (post-tax) and put into a summer savings account. Then we receive the money in 4 payments during the summer: July 1, July 15, August 1, and August 15. It isn't "free" money. It isn't pay for "doing nothing". The district is simply disbursing money that I already earned during the school year. Could I save it on my own? Sure but I like them doing it for me so I don't have to think about it and so I don't get tempted to use it for other things. So today is "payday". The deposit is about the same amount my neighbor claims she and her son live on during the course of a month. I will use it to pay down bills. I thought I was going to have to save it for September's rent but I get paid Sept 4 and it is a "big" check (no voluntary deductions) so I will drop a check off at the management office then. Rent is due on the 1st but they give you until the 5th before they charge a late fee. I've never been late beyond the 5th and I don't intend to start now.
