Snacks From the Past

On Sundays, decades ago, my cousins from the city would come and visit us on the farm. My Gramma was always very pleased to see them. My grandfather would measure each of them and put a mark on the wall on the door frame to the utility room. After visiting with them, my cousins, there were 4 of them, would all cross the lane to our house. I loved it when they visited, we would have so much fun together playing. At 3pm it was snack time. We all would make our way into the kitchen at our grandparents' house. Gramma would cut the bottoms of her Ivory dish soap bottles down to be a few inches tall. They made cute little plastic snack bowls, and being made of plastic, they were unbreakable. Gramma would measure out cheezies into 8 of the little dishes. That was always our snack on visiting Sundays. And you know what, I still enjoy a little dish of cheezies, only now they are in regular bowls. It is my favorite snack actually. It reminds me of her and simple times from my childhood. What is your go-to snack? ~Photo is mine, but unrelated

I don't have one go to snack, I seem to have quite a few I wonder if grandparents still measure the growth of their grand children like our grand parents did

@Ineeddentures We would never attempt to remove them too early nor leave them in the current seats beyond the recommended weight and size, as that is just as dangerous. Turning them to face forward was a big deal, we just did that earlier this calendar year. I believe that the expiration date on the seats that I bought are some time in 2030 or 2031, so we have time.

We don't measure the twins. My husband gets to see them 5 days a week, so it isn't really necessary for us. When I saw how big they look in their carseats that perhaps they will be ready to go without them before long. He has to check the weight and height before the carseats can be taken out of the backseat.

I do not believe I ever tried cheezies, I like potato chips time by time. When we visited my grandmother with my cousins she always prepared gnocco fritto (a sort of fried bread) that she served with prosciutto and dried sausage

Your grandmother surely spoiled you and your cousins with such a nice snack. I suppose that part of it may be regional and also related to the times we were living in. When we visited at my mother's parents house as children, we did not receive snacks. Harper and Willow get fresh fruit from me.

@Juliaacv - It was regional, my uncle made the prosciutto and dried sausages so grandmother always had some full ones at home. My mother prepared small sandwiches with lettuce and tuna for us.

@kareng I don't really care for cake, now as for pies......I like almost any kind of a fruit pie. In fact, we are having peach pie for supper tonight.

Not sure I have one as it varies quite a bit..probably popcorn. Sis is addicted to triscuits. She says she eats them every day.

@Juliaacv I guess you mean the kernels? I never think of popcorn as having a shell. As long as they all pop I eat everything.

I like popcorn but not the fussing with the shells from the kernels after eating them.

Are cheezies the same as cheetos? The only snacks I remember getting were the baked goods mom made, but that was way back in the 1950s.

Yes, they pretty much are, just not the name brand of cheetos. She always treated us with the store brand, and I prefer those these days, they are saltier, and I like that.

@rebelann I am not certain when my grandmother was born, but I do recall her talking about raising a family during the depression years and stretching a dollar.

Way back when we visited our stern grandmother- my Mom's Mom- she would pull out a full sized Hershey candy bar for each of us. I still remember that antique buffet cabinet. In those days we thought it a big deal to be given a dime for our allowance.

My mother's parents didn't give us snacks. I remember buying full sized chocolate bars for a nickel, then they put them up to a dime.
