it's about 10:29 p.m. here in Nigeria, I'm back from visiting my stepdad at the hospital. Got home a few hours ago, then went straight into a few online gigs.
There's a little bit of good news. He managed to eat about four spoonfuls of custard. And I was told that he had some water before I arrived. So we're hoping he continues to recover, so he can eat properly again and be discharged.
The caregiver started yesterday, and I met him today. My mum said the nurse showed him how to bathe my stepdad yesterday, and he managed it himself today. So that's good to know.
Of course, that money side is still on my mind, and I'm hoping he continues to recover, so the bills don't grow any bigger.
Something that I witnessed today left me pretty disappointed. During the doctors' ward round, one of the nurses was watching a movie on her phone with the volume on while the doctor was attending to my stepdad.
What surprised me was that she didn't seem bothered that patients and families were right there. When the doctor needed her assistance, she simply put the phone down without even stopping the movie, helped for a moment, and then carried on.
I found that incredibly unprofessional. Patients deserve your full attention, especially during a ward round, and I couldn't help thinking if a supervisor or the hospital owner had been present, that probably wouldn't have happened.
I wanted to speak up, but my mum advised me to let it go, so I did. But it's stayed on my mind. I believe people entrusted with caring for patients should take that responsibility seriously.

In a way it is. But that's the world we live in. Sometimes, it's good multi tasking to be able to do that. but, if she had ignored the order then I'd agree completely. I'm just on the fence. Because the past couple generations (gen z and ALpha) have no idea what professionlism is, and don't care. The doctor must've been used to or unbothered by the behavior, or could've repermanded the nurse later for it. It's hard to say.

It is encouraging to hear there has been a little progress, and hopefully that continues day by day. I can understand why the nurse’s behaviour stayed on your mind. Even small things can leave a strong impression when you are already worried about someone in hospital. Are there usually clear rules about mobile phone use for hospital staff there?

I agree with you thar nurses should do their best to take of patients since would the nurse like it if the shoe was on the other foot?

Oh well
In some ways I can see why your mum said to leave it alone
But
I think I would have brought the matter up with which ever nurse is in charge of the ward
I think you are right to be a bit miffed

That's good news to hear that your stepdad was able to eat a few bites of custard but I'm with you on the unprofessional way the nurse was on her phone. I would have been annoyed but probably wouldn't have said anything.

I think your disappointment is completely understandable. A hospital ward round is an important time for the medical team to assess patients, discuss their care, and communicate with the people looking after them. Watching a movie with the volume on while all of that is happening comes across as very disrespectful to the patients and their families.
