For the Love of a Guinea Pig

Never knew this so passing the good news along. There is a Guinea Pig Sanctuary in Salisbury, Massachusetts. Everyday the owner Kimie Smothermon is greeted by nearly 400 guinea pigs who squeal, chirp, purr and enjoy life. If you can imagine such a scene all these darling little creatures are housed in a workspace divided up into cages that are stacked from floor to ceiling. They hang out and eat lettuce and other vegetation and also receive visitors. Volunteers have named them according to personality and their names are displayed outside of their cages. What is also amazing about these guinea pigs is that they are intelligent creature and remember their caretakers by smell so they know to approach their favorites. Suddenly I am thinking guinea pig but then I looked online and it says to be prepared to spend at least $100 a month for the darling. That is a bit too much for me.

It's really no different to eating lamb, chicken, etc. Just a different culture.

When I was a kid, whenever our mom wanted us to take a break from the city life or when we are a bit sick, she'd bring us to her Uncle's farm. Her Uncle Nono has guniea pigs. Too many of them I couldn't count. Uncle Nono would proudly show them to us and how cute and cuddly they were. This post just reminded me of how I enjoyed my childhood back then.

I know my fishies respond to me in particular and will swim between my fingers if I put my fingers in their tank. They dart away from Pretty if she does that. I don't know if they think they're petting me or that I'm petting them.

I hope she is keeping males and females separate. That seems a lot per month for a tiny creature.

I don’t like the idea of them being in cages stacked floor to ceiling.
