How do you deal with stress and worries?

I try very hard to deal with stress in a positive way, up front and head on, so to speak. Everything from deep breathing to walking to sitting calmly to do something that calms me--and I can generally get past the extreme part. I've never been the Nervous Nellie type of person, I try to find my solutions in actions, prayer, breathing, reading, whatever works at the time. More and more, I am noticing people are extremely stressed and overwhelmed. A friend of mine, coincidently who is a former head nurse for a psych unit of a large hospital, seems to be falling apart from her own stress. She is fighting some severe health issues, her very elderly mother's health decline, and now friend's husband has been diagnosed with Dementia. She is completely overwhelmed...she doesn't live nearby anymore. Her adult children are scattered across the country. I truly do hurt for her. She does have a counselor but usually that has to be done by telehealth due to her crazy life. I think she is going to hire a full time health helper. Her mother has a caregiver, but her mother is a handful and that's a kind way to say it.. Friend's stress is overwhelmiing. I can relate on the stress thing. I know many of you can, too. Health issues of our own or someone we love and care about, the economy, all of the upheaval in the world we see and hear about on a daily basis, and on and on it goes. I know many things have to be planned ahead for long term, it does help to have some simple things to focus on a day-to-day basis. At least it does for me. When you search online about people currently feeling stressed, you get way, way too much information. I found my ways of coping often work for people (hey, I was just going with what works for me!) I also discovered there is such a thing as the American Institute of Stress. Who knew? They claim these as top stressors: Personal finances and inflation: Cited by 64% to 66% of individuals as a primary source of anxiety. World events and politics: About 70% to 71% of adults feel stressed or anxious about current global events and the economy. Job insecurity: 54% of U.S. workers say fear of layoffs or instability significantly impacts their stress levels. They also reported many are stressed over fear of not being able to afford proper housing, lack of food and resources, etc. I think it helps to remind myself what IS going well, instead of dwelling on what isn't. Now that isn't always possible, as we know--but it does help. How do you handle stress? pinterest picture

I do hope you can find a de-stressor that works for you, Michael. I know it isn't easy.

Everyone and every incident causing worry is unique. For me, when I am going through a medical procedure that I knew was coming and I know the length of it, I usually find prayer works. I also count, yes, I count in my head to pass the time. Overall in my life my biggest go-to for stress has been finding the silver lining. And although that can be a challenge, it keeps my mind busy, and prevents me from ranting or complaining needlessly. Nobody else can usually help. It also includes counting my blessings, sometimes we do not do that often enough. You know all of this though, you have your own stressors and successful ways of coping.

@MarieCoyle I find myself giving thanks and counting my blessings on a very regular, and daily, basis, especially on those great days. I think that it comes realizing that my strengths come from my religious convictions and my life experiences.

@Juliaacv I do the very same. And even though we don't like to think of unpleasant things that have happened to us, or unpleasant people, they did help shape us in to who we are today. Faith and life's learnings and love carry us through, don't they?

Yes, finding that silver lining is often difficult, but it does keep the mind busy, as you say. Counting my blessings is a huge one for me. When things really get bad, I often try to just remember really good days, days that I won't ever forget, and that helps me, too.

Staying positive is a good choice. I flipped my switch to that several years ago and it has made a very nice change. It is also calming in a way too. You know not to go overboard with the stress and it is like a signal to your body to stay calm.

It helps to be aware that you are reaching your high stress level...so that you can take a bit of time to de-stress. At least, that works for me. The kids say I do well with this, but of course they cannot see inside my head!

@MarieCoyle Right, I'm bad of letting things build. And it's not good for you.

First, I pray. Then I heed John Prine’s advice: “blow up your TV, throw away your papers.” I do not watch the news.

Well it feels really difficult to handle that kind of situation. I have read a lot of docs and don't 's on how to handle stress and worries but they're so shortlisted. I do it just like what you do. I thrive on what is going well rather than what is not. That's to have that positive mental attitude.

It does help so much to try to focus on the positive. It does take us a long way through life.

Reading this reminds of the arrogance of a few people who claim if we plan well enough we shouldn’t have to worry about food or housing. Not surprisingly, these know it alls don’t have children, and have good health insurance. The most stressful days of my life were helping my dad take care of my mom and dealing with my own own health problems. There were days my dad thought the stress was causing him to have a heart attack. I prayed a lot. I saw a counselor. I thought about wanting to die. The only reason I got through any of it was God. While God is my go to, I’m not ashamed to say He also helped come up with the science of antidepressants, and I take advantage of those too!

Not very well I'm afraid. Deep breathing does help though..talking to someone exercising, relaxing and even mylot ting can help. Personally, I would find it terribly hard to deal with the situation you are in .it never lets up, and seems like not enough help.

That was well put, Snowy. I know a bit of exercising, as well as the other things you mentioned, help a lot. I also enjoy admiring nature and watching the antics of the geese and ducks, and in my case often reading helps a lot, too.

Poor lady! I don't think I could handle having my kids spread out all over the country. I have delt with anxiety and stress for many years. With my Daughter's undiagnosed bi-polarism and then my grandson's issues when he was younh. Again undiagnosed. It's so very hard when it's your kids. Now I have learned some things to do and, if I get real bad, I have some non addictive anxiety pills that are a real help at times. Stress over what is happening in the world is very real. I don't listen to news about the war but I sure do keep track of Trump idiocies. I have to. Plus I am glad to stay inside. Helps my anxiety ALOT.

There are so many reasons to be stressed in our days. I am not very good in handle my stress and worries. I write down my fears and I work on that to try to imagine all possible solutions. The actual situation of the world is stressing me. When I hear of rich Europeans moving to South America because they fear WWIII I am seriously concerned.

I don't think I could isolate myself...I enjoy things in nature, etc. as well as getting out and about at times. You did speak a few months back about trying to get outside...I still have hopes that you do that. Remember that beach is close by, and beaches and waves can be so, so soothing and calming.
