Talking to our new neighbors

There’s a big white near me that has been vacant a year or so. About a month ago people were over there cutting the very tall grass down and throwing every item left inside the house out into the yard.
They parked on part of our lawn and I asked them to move. They were nice about it and parked up in a small spot on their front lawn.
They have been back once since to mow and parked in that small spot of theirs again.
Last night I noticed a camper parked on the side of their house and today saw all the vehicles back parked in the small spot.
I thought it was odd and so I went over and said “I know this probably sounds silly to ask but do you know that big garage over there is yours.”
The women didn’t speak English so using Google Translate we communicated. They had no idea the garage area is theirs as it didn’t show on the document they said when they bought it. They told me their names and that they each have two children.
I walked home and saw their husbands looking around the big garage. I mentioned it to my parents and now my dad is worried it’s still in his name.
It shouldn’t be. Years ago my parents bought the property next door to that one. They paid the taxes that year and saw they had been taxed on that big garage. They went to the court house and the tax office would not refund the money but said they would take care of it so that they weren’t charged the following years.
My dad is wondering now if that’s why the taxes on that property are so high because maybe he’s still been charged taxes for something he doesn’t own and has never gotten to use. What a mess.
He is going tomorrow back to the courthouse to get things looked into.

That sounds like a good idea. Who wants to pay more than they need to?

@snowy22315 they bought that land gosh 15+ years ago. That would be a long time paying taxes when they shouldn’t have had to be. He definitely needs to look into this.

I really hope your dad hasn't been paying taxes on something he didn't own... Don't you have to list what you own every year for county and state taxes like we do in Missouri? Every year, the state sends us a tax report that lists the properties we paid taxes on the year before and ask us if we own anything new to report for the current year. I fill it out, sign it and send it back to them.

I think the visit to the courthouse is a splendid idea
I think I would be worried as well about it still being in your dad's name

Yes, what a mess. I hope he gets that straightened out. Neighbors can be problems at times.
