Sometimes I think.

I’ve had a thought today and disturbed myself somewhat. Did you ever realise that you have always been in your own company? Others come and go but there’s no getting away from yourself. Now that’s something and a half. And we are all alike on this point. And then there are churches - they really baffle me. A church to my mind is a pile of stone, bricks or wood put together in a pleasing way that frames an empty space where sometimes worship happens, or maybe always, if you count the midnight silence. No so the thoughts of the popular mind. Churches have become monetisable edifices for some, concentrations of piety for others that allow people to live how they wish so long as they head down to the spiritual car wash once in a while for a good hosing down. Here in Italy there is a quite unnecessary surfeit of churches, mostly ornate, but some are very plain. I do like a plain Church.

I never took the time to think that I have always been in my own company, it's disturbing. I also prefer a plain Church, the very old ones were plain. The Italian part of Switzerland has more Churches than Italy and they ring the bells every hour.

Did it hurt when you disturbed yourself with that thought?

Churches are a celebration of architecture and art then comes the religion,

I see churches as a place where you can more or less expect people to be civil.

I have never seen such fancy churches as I saw in Austria. Melk was a bit of an epiphany. I felt quite disgusted that it was so opulent when there are so many starving. Of course, they can't sell it. I know that but it was so over the top, it turned me right off.
