Would you ever consider going on a dental holiday abroad? It’s a thing in the UK, whereby the holiday maker is flown to Turkey (or elsewhere) to stay in 5 star accommodation and have all sorts of extensive treatment at a very cheap rate, or so the promise goes. The cost can be significantly less than British prices for implants, veneers and “total mouth re-modelling” whatever that is, and it’s very popular. Some people are very happy with their treatment, however, as you can imagine, many are the disasters. The main destination for these holidays is Turkey, and people can be heard talking about going for their Turkish teeth while having a holiday at the same time. While there are no doubt many well trained and properly regulated dentists in Turkey, there are the other sort too. Horror stories of botched surgeries abound, with patients returning home in agony, and our national health system won’t cover the corrective treatment needed. The insurance the people take out is usually inadequate and the offices of dodgy dentists are often vacated by the time problems arise, and guilty dentists are untraceable. It’s all very common knowledge, but still people get sucked in by the advertising and the ridiculous pricing. Companies often run pop-up clinics in hotels in the UK as an advertising tool to lure people in, but there are no laws against such companies advertising their wares, and since all the treatment takes place outside the UK the is no legal recourse if things go wrong. Bariatric and cosmetic surgeries are also offered abroad and the risks are high. Dodgy practitioners and gullible clients is a dangerous mix - don’t fall for it people, no matter how attractive it appears.
