Yes, I have just been out to collect the conkers that were blown off the tree in last night's wind. We found out, quite by accident, a few years ago that squirrels love to munch on conkers Ever since then I have collected them each year and given them to my Mom as she has several squirrels that visit her garden. Do you collect or save anything to give the wildlife ?

@traceyjayne A conker dropped upon my wife's head one day in a park and she issued a loud exclamation of wounded surprise much the delight of whatever kids were with us. Nothing whatsoever to do with your question regarding doing stuff to help wildlife, I know, but there you are. Conkers are often kept in cupboards and on windowsills because they are said to repel spiders.

@Fiacre. We have conkers in the corner of our rooms to keep spiders away .....it works ...sometimes ..lol I have a basket of conkers and one of pinecones on my window sill. I love natural things and I love their colour too.

I hope you made sure they were the kind that humans can't eat before you gave them to the squirrel. I've got a bag of raw sunflower seeds in the fridge that I've been slowly feeding to the little fat squirrel that gets mad because I don't grow veggies in the pots on our front porch anymore. He kept eating all the lettuce I grew for Pretty's salads. Crows and starlings eat them, too, if the little fat squirrel doesn't eat them fast enough. He's learning to come and get them when I call him. I do have some "conkers" but they're called buckeyes here. I saved some from the last time we were in a local-ish park. Buckeyes aren't fit for human consumption, either. (We had to watch the little kids so they didn't try to stick them in their mouths.)

@Traceyjayne What kind of melon? Some are human edible and some aren't.

My stepmom saves everything she can for the birds. Now, the squirrels end up stealing half of what she has for those birds, but the birds do get SOME of what was saved for them.

@AmbiePam. Yes, squirrels are cheeky little things. There was one years ago Mom called Charlie ( it was a girl squirrel ) and she became very friendly too. Do you think honeydew melon seeds would be okay to put out ?

Squirrels are pretty good at finding their own food, so don’t need help. They certainly never help me!

We used to have bird feeders out in our yard, but we no longer do. We live in a big city and there are less birds here to feed.

That's really sweet, your mom's squirrels are lucky to have you collecting for them. I don't really save anything for wildlife but I do leave out water for birds sometimes. Conkers though, never knew squirrels liked those, learned something new today.

@Wrexxo. We found out a few years ago that squirrels like conkers as Mom crushed a few up for the birds....next thing she knew,, she looked out of the window to see a squirrel happily munching away on a conker.

Just now
I don't think we have those here. We feed the squirrels here nuts and whatever we have we think they may like. We have a family of them in the trees around the apartment. I call them Norm, Norma and Normette. They are cute.
