Surprise!! When you think of this guy, you think of beaches, warm locations, and tropical drinks. You do not think of New York City. That’s okay, he mentioned it, and that makes it count in this countdown. That makes these countdowns so much more fun for me…and so much weirder for you! Here’s today’s song. Volcano - Jimmy Buffett The first time I saw Jimmy Buffett was on this tour. He was “opening” for the Eagles at the University of Florida football stadium in Gainesville, Florida. I say “opening” with quotes for a reason: he did a full two-hour show. Then he came out and sang “The Greeks Don’t Want No Freaks” and “Take It Easy” with the Eagles during the encore! Anyway, this is a fun little song about natural phenomena. There were, according to geological websites, over sixty volcanoes erupting in 1978-79, so which one Buffett was referring to is up to your imagination. I had this song playing when I drove to Diamond Head State Park in Honolulu to hike up to the top of the crater. Back then (1984) they said Diamond Head was “an extinct volcano.” Nowadays they say there’s no such thing, because even “extinct” volcanoes can erupt once again, even after centuries of no activity. Glad I didn’t know that in 1984! Volcano Written by Jimmy Buffett, Keith Sykes, and Harry Dailey Recorded by Jimmy Buffett From Volcano, 1979 NYC LYRICS: But I don’t want to land in New York City, don’t want to land in Mexico

Haha Diamond Head hike with this song playing sounds like a great memory. Funny how they used to call it extinct and now nobody's really sure lol. Love the Buffett trivia about opening for the Eagles too, that's wild.

Either one of them at the time (1980) would have been a headliner, so I basically got to see two headline acts…for ten dollars.

Never heard this before, good beat to it. What scares me is that I'm not far from the grand canyon and I've heard it had a volcano eruption about 1000 years ago or so which means it could be overdue to blow.

@rebelann — too bad, those boots were made for walkin’! There’s a live camera on Old Faithful, it just erupted a few minutes ago. I’d love to see it in person but that’s a really cool consolation!

Lots of “dormant” volcanoes out there. They say that’s what causes the geysers in Yellowstone.

I don’t remember seeing Jimmy Buffet that young. I swear he just got better with age.

I remember watching him sing this at the Royal Albert Hall at a charity event in aid of Montserrat, after the volcanic eruptions devastated the island. That was way later than 1979, but I do believe he wrote it there.

What was even cooler was it was in Don Felder’s hometown! (Tom Petty’s, too, but he wasn’t at the show. )

@FourWalls - Hometown shows are always fun. It's like Earth, Wind & Fire playing Denver.

You get points but you don’t have to go to no Three Mile Island to collect them.
