How do you run away from earthquakes?

I was about to curl up for my nap today when the earth (and house) shook all over. I jumped out of the bed, swore , put on my flip flops and opened the door to the garden. I call the glass giant door in my bedroom "the earthquake door". It is the easiest way to go out. I am very much worried about my next house. There are apartments everywhere, but none in the first floor. I have been told that there are store rooms I can rent to put part of my excess furniture while I decide what to do with it. But the house or apartment in the ground floor is still a problem. And I am terrified of living alone at a place where I will feel trapped. I should learn how to get over my dread of quakes. What are you afraid of?
