A bloomin' good year for Sturt's desert pea

It’s spring in Australia and that means wildflower season. The flowers this year are spectacular with lots of tourists touring the country to ogle and marvel at Nature’s bounty. The stunning Sturt (desert) pea (Swainsona formosa) is the floral emblem of South Australia and is a spectacular bloom. It’s named after the explorer, Charles Sturt. Mostly it’s a brilliant red with a black centre but this year there are a number of pink, white and even purple flowers. The seed has a hard coating which inhibits germination unless conditions are right. They can stay dormant in the desert for many years if there is no rain. If you want to grow them in the garden, you can do one of three things: nick the tough seed coat, rub the seeds gently with sandpaper or place the seeds in hot water and soak overnight.
