Food/Drink Going Bad

I’ve had soy milk. My doctor recommended soy milk and more protein so I bought soy milk that had added protein. I bought a different brand today, and I can’t tell if it’s supposed to taste “ that way” or if something is wrong with it. It doesn’t stink, it is not passed its expiration date, but it doesn’t taste like the last soy milk I tried. I don’t want to waste money so I think I should just power through. Maybe I just need to get used to it…

Sometimes if a product has not passed expiry date and does not stinks, it can be difficult to judge why it tastes "different". May be the product has "started" to decay a bit. In this case, it is not good but may be not too bad to cause harm. Or may be some of the samples of the same brand did not pass sufficient quality check.

I'm sure it is fine. I prefer coconut and oat milk to soy milk though.

I think if I try coconut milk again I need to get it flavored. The regular just tasted so bland to me.

@NJChicaa Maybe I should try a different brand than the first time I had it. I didn’t think there would be much difference, but clearly in some things there are.

@AmbiePam I like the unflavored one. It is a good sub for milk in oatmeal and that kind of stuff.

Does soy milk change in consistency when it spoils like cow's milk does? I just poured myself a tall glass of milk, took a drink and immediately noticed that it left a bit of a film on the glass, and although my sense of smell isn't the greatest with this headcold I dumped it down the drain. Better to be safe than sorry.

That’s a good idea. I think I’ll just dump it. I don’t want to get sick.

@AmbiePam I just did a quick search. If it is thick or lumpy smells a bit acidic or the taste is off, it is probably bad. But if it is thick/lumpy and smells off who would want to taste it? Yikes that is asking for trouble.

Pretty bought some soy milk that had added protein in it. They used peas as the added protein and neither one of us liked it. I threw it away.

Ew, I really didn’t think too hard on what they were putting in it since the other one had tasted so good.

@AmbiePam Yeah, everybody knows how much I love peas. It made me almost urp... then Pretty took a sip and said she didn't like it, either. I dumped it down the sink.

I should have a review. It’s still may not have mattered, but it wouldn’t have hurt.

It’s usually good. I like it better than coconut or oat milk.

Never tried it without protein even, so can't really be of help. But hopefully someone else has better advice lol

Soy milk can taste really different from brand to brand, so it might just be that one. If it doesn't smell off and it's not expired, it's probably fine. Maybe try it in a smoothie or with cereal first, that helps hide the taste a bit.
