Do You Ever Wonder....?

Life tends to go on doesn't it? I have known several people in my life that moved away and I wonder to this day how they are, if they are still alive and so forth. I often wonder too if our friendship meant as much to them as it did to me. One of those people was a gal named Janet. She lived in my neighborhood and we had become friends. This was back when I was 12 or 13. She was Swedish and was very smart. She wasn't silly or immature. I thought she was great. One day she told me her family was moving. Her dad had been transferred. She promised to write and I waited patiently for a letter that never came. I never heard from her again. Then there was Jim. He lived in the brownstone apartments when we did. We became friends because we both spent time in the big back yard. I still find it weird that he and I were the only people who, while I lived there anyway, ever used that big back yard. He and I went up to Idaho City when is a small old town up the highway a ways. He knew where the hot springs were and we enjoyed several. He showed me around and I loved it. He was funny and always had a funny story. We always found fun stuff to do. Then he tried to get romantic and ruined everything. Soon after that summer of 1986 he moved with his daughter to Oregon. I often wonder how he is and what he is up to nowadays. Do you have people from your past that you think about occasionally and wonder how they are?

yes of course, I just saw one of my high school friends on Facebook recently, so I got to message here. But we haven't been in contact for more than 30 years now

There's always that. But many I knew by their maiden names and so it's not easy to find those.

Oh, yeah. I met a gal in college. Now, I'm kind of an odd bird (as if my friends didn't already know that) and I'm a terrible communicator. Now, at 72 I wish I knew where she was and how her life turned out. I have a lot to share since I vanished months ago and I will post about them soon.

That’s a lovely, bittersweet reflection. Life does go on, but it doesn’t always close the loops. Janet not writing probably said more about her circumstances or her ability to keep a promise at that age than about whether your friendship mattered. And Jim sounds like someone who gave you a real gift—fun, adventure, Idaho City, the hot springs—until he changed the shape of the friendship. It makes sense you’d still wonder about both of them.

I do wonder about them. I've found a couple on FB but haven't got in touch. I'm still thinking about it.

I found one I knew in Pocatello and we had a nice chat. There is one other one I wonder about but doubt I will ever find her.

Yeah. I had a male best friend back when I was in high school, freshman years. He was the only boy I would held hands with and what we had was very platonic. We would talk about our crushes like I would with my girl best friend. He moved to the US before we could even graduate high school. When I was in college, he would call me on the phone. That time it was a long distance phone call and very expensive. He was in the army. But then we lost touch again and I never heard of him at all. Not sure he's on Facebook. I tried looking for him but never found him there.

There's one friend in particular that we've known from way back. He isn't sending emails or whatever to hubby anymore. I don't think his wife would let us know if he passed on. It's bugging us a bit.

Yes, of course. Oddly one is from when I was very young. My Mum used to take me to play with two sisters, called Miranda and Fay. I don't know how we met them, I think it must have been through the playgroup in the local town. Anyway I remember going to play with them, and then they moved away and that was it. I was about 3 years old. The other is from much, much later. A person I used to work with. We were the same age and liked many of the same things. We both had boyfriends who lived some distance away so during the weeks we were free and we used to have so much fun together, both at work (where we supported each other through some difficult times) and outside it. We stayed in touch after we both moved on, then we both had children around the same time and we did meet up when they were babies then she just dropped me and I don't know why. A while later she sent a very friendly message but I realised from the content that she must have meant it for someone else with the same first name; I replied saying nice to hear from her and that was that. I guess I will never stop wondering what I did wrong

I doubt it was anything you did. I had one friend that I knew when things were really tough in her life. I tried to contact her later and she wouldn't communicate with me at all. This might be what happened with your friend. People move on and don't want to reminisce sometimes.

There are several people from my school days that I think about from time to time. What job did they end up doing….did they marry….did they have children …where are they living …
