Tasting Trader Joe's Swedish Princess raspberry cake

I used to do mini reviews of unusual flavored and new food products. Rarely sample items these days because my source 99 Cents Store went out of business several years ago. People were snapping up this cake on sale at Trader Joe's so why not try one.
The cake is two sponge layers with thin raspberry custard filling in between topped by cream Marzipan kind of icing/frosting. To be kept in freezer until consumption then refrigerated.
I didn't care for the cake finding it bland and lacking distinct taste. Sponge part was nowhere near homemade quality. Sort of stiff. I was annoyed how the syrupy filling practically squirted in mouth making the sponge gooey. Topping on the hard side and easily detaches. Not all that sweet but an extra sugar injection wouldn't help and the last thing we need is more sugar content as it is.
There are many Trader Joe fans there who likely would like this cake but not me. I was one slice and done.

Great review, but disappointing on the taste. I’ve always wanted to visit a Trader Joe’s. The closest one is 45 minutes away, and it’s relatively new. I’m not driving 45 minutes just for a visit to Trader Joe’s either. Who knows though. Maybe that store is worth a 45 minute drive.

I like your in depth review. One of the more unusual things I got at TJ's were the Apple Crisp Milk Chocolate Caramels. Highly recommended.,the best chocolate I have had in years.I'd skip the cake. I wanted to get the Apple Cinnamon buns, but there were only two in the package for 4.50 and they were 412 calories per..pass!

Those sound interesting. They are caramel candies with an apple taste?

I figured the 99c stores would die, given that our Dollar Tree stores are now a dollar and a half tree.
The cake doesn’t sound like anything that’d appeal to me. In fact, I’m one of those weirdoes who doesn’t think much of Trader Joe’s, period. I’ve been in ours a few times and found them overpriced. I guess they’re a “cult” like Publix.

@JohnRoberts — even Five Below has prices over $5. These days you’re only safe naming a store after a price is you name it “Less Than a Million Dollars.”

Trader Joe's is a rarity for me except if they have something specific on sale. Dollar Tree is now Dollar Plus Tree because it's priced whatever

Anything cake and raspberry is right up my alley but after reading your review I certainly wouldn't waste my money. I would have expected that cake to be so delicious I'd want to buy a few

Just because I didn't care for it, doesn't mean you might like it. We all react differently.

I get all my groceries from Walmart delivered once a month. I usually get strawberry cheesecake, which is really good, and this time I will also take pumpkin pie for the season,

I don't like marzipan. It just feels weird in my mouth.
Thank you for a food review. These have been missed.

I don't think I'd like it either with your description of it. That stinks about the 99 cents store going out of business. I wonder if there are any of those stores left in the world?
