Emergency supplies.

Do you put away an emergency stash of food? I don’t mean in case of a Russian invasion or a nuclear attack, just something to tide you over if you can’t get to the shops because of illness or inclement weather. Our government has advised us to have some food and other supplies put away for such eventualities, but I wonder if they have a bigger eventuality in mind, such as the national reserves depleting because of war, natural disasters or the contrariness of some world leaders. Power cuts could become a regular feature of life. And it makes sense. If my wife and I both get flu we have no-one close at hand to go to the shops for us. If we get snowed in we could be stuck at the top of the hill we live on for weeks, and that doesn’t even take into account what stunts Putin, Trump or that North Korean guy might pull, disrupting supplies and plunging the world into further chaos. So every week I buy a few extra food items to put away - canned fruit and vegetables, canned fish, bottled water, pasta, rice and anything else I find that is long lasting and, above all, nice to eat. I only buy stuff that I would normally buy, nothing you “cook” instantly just by adding hot water to, like dried noodles. Nothing you need to freeze, and as much stuff that can be happily eaten cold. Recently it’s been jars of olives that I’ve been squirrelling away, and the problem with that is that they are just too available and I can’t resist olives so they get moved too quickly from the emergency store to the every day cupboard. Toilet paper, soap, torches, batteries, candles, matches, toothpaste, pain killers …. I’m no prepper (or am I?) but there’s little worse than being stuck in the house with no olives, anchovies or mustard, so it pays to exercise foresight. Do you have emergency supplies?

Considering you are one of the more level headed Mylotters, I fear there are those who are really going to take your words to heart. The bottled water I buy gets drank because my tap water is trash. I do have plenty of cans of things given to me out of the goodness of people’s hearts but I don’t plan on eating unless I’m starving.

@ambiepam Me, level headed? There are those who believe me to be as mad as a bag of frogs.

Yes, we actually do. We talk about being prepared for the zombie apocalypse. And we do have plenty of options because we are within a few miles of local stores and they all deliver, so if we were just under the weather, we should get anything we needed delivered to us. But we do have put aside some cases of bottled water, some canned foods, some military rations, batteries, flashlights, medical supplies

I have some emergency food that you can eat right out of the can. I always stock up on canned foods.

My husband was obsessed with emergency supplies and in Switzerland it was mandatory to keep them in the shelter we had in our house. I have plenty, olive oil jars, toilet paper, toothpaste, soap, torches that do not need batteries (manually powered), canned beans, tuna. I should go downstairs and check all the expiry dates.

I love the way you say ….. There’s little worse than being stuck in the house with no olives, anchovies or mustard. However, on a serious note , it is always good to have a stash in case of emergencies. I always have plenty of pasta, rice, coffee, pop, toilet rolls, canned fish , soup, baked beans and I do keep things in the freezer.

@traceyjayne When we lived in the bush we did a big shop twice a year. Vegetables, chickens and eggs we grew ourselves but flour, rice, sugar, andrex etc had to be bought in bulk. As the flour came to an end there were always weevils in it - extra protein my mother said as she baked weevils cake.

@Traceyjayne Oh you ought never to view farm produce as anything other than a crop to be harvested, and we made the rookie mistake of naming our first two hens from whence the eggs did grow - Audrey and Heather. Yes, I know!

@xFiacre you grew vegetables , chicken, and eggs …… How far apart do you plant the eggs ? How long do they take to grow ? How do you know when they are ready to pick ? Yes, I have seen weevils in flour ….they didn’t go in a cake …..they went in the bin !

Yeah I keep a small stash, mostly canned beans, rice, pasta and some bottled water. Nothing fancy, just enough for a week or so if we cant get out. The olives problem made me laugh, I'd eat mine too fast as well.

We try to keep a certain amount of extra provisions in the pantry - stuff that will keep for quite some time if not ages.
