Where is all the cod roe ?

One meal that I love is tinned cod roe, mushy peas and chips. You can get battered tinned roe at the fish & chip shop, but I find that too greasy for me. I prefer to just fry mine without batter. However, I have been looking in all the major supermarkets ….and a couple of the smaller ones, for several months now. There are no tins of cod roe anywhere ! Where are they all ? Why aren't they in the shops ? Has somebody decided that we shouldn’t be eating it ? If so, why is it still available in the fish & chip shop ? Where are they getting it from ? What do you think ? Have you noticed this ? Do you eat cod roe ?

@Traceyjayne It’s just not a thing here. There isn’t a call for tinned cod roe. Is that big where you are, or is that just a family preference?

@AmbiePam I know …I’m teasing you x It was a big thing here ….but obviously not so much now as we can’t get it in the shops ….although it is still in all fish shops, so people are still eating it. Roe, mushy peas and chips is a well known meal .

@traceyjayne Where has all the cod roe gone? Long time passing. Where has all the cod roe gone? Long time ago. Where has all the cod roe gone? Gone from Tracey's fishy shelf When will it ever learn? When will it ever learn?

I definitely don't. Atlantic cod populations are on a massive decline so that's probably part of it. Even when I get sushi I always specify "no roe". No thank you.

@NJChicaa. Yes, the decline in cod population may have something to do with it, however if they are still catching cod, which they are , what are they doing with the cod roe from them !

@Traceyjayne Don't know. They really should stop catching them for several years to let the population increase. I've never heard of fried cod roe. I don't think it is a thing in the US.

@NJChicaa we get it in round cans about 2 inches thick. I cut it into three slices and fry it. The fish shops cut it to about the same thickness and batter it and deep fry it. I only like the tinned roe my Dad used to love the fresh roe ….of course you could only get that in the roe season,

Honestly I've never tried cod roe, but now I'm curious how it tastes with mushy peas. Maybe the shops just stopped stocking it because not enough people buy it. Have you tried looking online, some small shops sell tins and ship them.

@Wrexxo. I guess it was popular as it’s a cheaper alternative to fish. I’ve not looked online, I’m not sure if big supermarkets can’t sell it , that smaller shops would be able to.

I don't eat it and have never seen it - or even ever really heard of it. Can you ask the fish and chip owner where he/she gets his?
