Do you buy your dog Christmas presents ? This was a subject on a tv panel programme this morning. One panelist said “ why would you buy a dog a present ….its only a dog “ ! She then went on to say “ the dog doesn’t know it’s Christmas “ The second panelist said “ my dog is part of the family so he gets presents, why would you not buy them presents “ ! I was shocked and saddened at the first panelist’s words …. When we had our dog ….a Westie called Cagney …he was most definitely part of the family, and he most certainly had presents at Christmas. Okay, so I’m not doo lally ……I know he didn’t know it was all about the little baby Jesus …. However, he knew it was a special time …. A tree came into the house ( that he wasn’t allowed to wee up ). And it was decorated. There were decorations all over the house, he saw the presents under the tree, he saw the excitement, laughter and hugs when people opened those presents . He was encouraged to open his presents too ….he loved to rip the paper and run off under the chair with it. He knew he got different treats and food at this time. So, he did know it was a special time, even though not obviously the meaning behind it. As part of the family why would you not include him in this special time ! Anyway, I am interested to hear your thoughts …. Do you buy your dog presents at Christmas ? If you haven’t got a dog ….what would you do if you did ?

I remember the first of the dogs I had that both my parents fell in love with was given a stocking full of dog treats for Christmas. It was with all the other presents we had for each other. Now, I get a special treat for my dog, and make sure she gets it before I leave for family Christmas, and when I get home. I wish she could come over for actual Christmas, but my sister “claims” to be allergic. Well, it must have come on suddenly because we had dogs all growing up and she used to play with mine when she’d visit me.

It might have something to do with if they moult or not. I know people with dogs that have to have the breeds that don’t moult otherwise they get ill …a change in breathing and sneezing etc ….that might be the same for your sister ( unless she is just being awkward ! ).

Yes, I buy my dog presents even when it's not Christmas. Just on random days—especially when I’m at the mall and see something cute that I know will make her happy

I certainly do buy my dog Christmas presents but just a few little things like toys and treats. And our dog gets a new personalized ornament for the tree every year.

We never fed our horses oats but I'd give them a small handful on Christmas morning.
