I can only imagine that clapping relieves the itch in their hands at wanting to slap him. LOL!

Bush is an idiot, moron, imbecile and a lot many more synonyms. He has done more damage to the American image in the world than any other President. The sooner he gets off that esteemed office the better for America and rest of the world!

Its a simple act of respect for what he is saying and also shows support by party for what he is saying.

Yeah, it could be annoying. People were trying to encourage his words every second he said them. I think they should wait until the whole speech is over before they have to clap.

I know I wouldn't have clapped, nothing a politician says is the truth anyway.

I'm guessing that you're talking about the State of the Union message. They clap so much because these type of speeches are full of popular ideas about what the president will do and wants the Congress to do, so they are big applause lines--I want to lower taxes, improve education, secure our borders, support the troops, defeat terrorism, stand up for Mom and apple pie, etc. They are statements that are designed to get applause and make the president look very popular.

I believe it is a form of camaraderie that has been adopted and adapted for the political arena. It has become part of a tradition, and is done no matter who the President is. In a way it is to show respect and approval--though I think it is more for respect of the position rather than approval lol.
