Is it true that left-over foods in the refrigerator age the same covered or not?

I heard that it is a waste of time when we cover our left over foods for the next day because they age the same way. Do you cover them? Why?

I do cover them, so that the foods do not exchange flavors. I do not like onion flavored vanilla pudding, for instance. Yes the food still ages, but no free floating bacteria and fungus take root there. The other reason to cover them is that a refrigerator is avery dry environment, and it dehydrates your food.

You are right, but covered or uncovered the bacteria can still grow there, or not?

Open containers with food should always be covered as this can reduce how much the compressor runs and will also reduce electricity bills. If the food is not covered it gives off moisture to the air that is circulating inside the refrigerator. As the water vapour can freeze the evaporator coils, it causes the compressor to run longer. Also, uncovered foods lose their flavour and can make the refrigerator smell bad.

I always cover any thing I put in the fridge so it wont dry out. Covering also keeps it from becoming contaminated and spoiled. I keep my celery in water to keep it fresh longer. I change the water often too. I cut up some of my apples and put them in plastic bags and squeeze as much air out as possible and they keep for a couple of days. I don't want foods to pick up oders from other foods or have things spill in them. so I cover every thing.

I cover them. Probably because bacteria and other icky stuff can get into them if you don't.

You are right bacteria and other germs just looking for something to get on and make you or your loved ones ill so stop and think of what could happen if you prevent things from happening you have less trouble in the future. What do you think?

I have never covered my food because I was worried about it aging faster , I always cover mine because I feel if you don't then it dries out really fast and doesn't have the same taste to it . Also if it tips over and is covered there is less likelyhood of it spilling all over the fridge .

More fresh in what sense? This is the controversy that I still do not understand.

fruit - here is some fruit I found lying around and thought it would fit perfect for this discussion.
Covering your food is not a waste of time as you put stuff in the refrigerater that has been out the food gets bacteria on it and you do not want to get that bacteria on your other foods and certain foods are so powerful in smells that the smell leaches onto other foods and ruins there taste so by not covering your food you are running the risk of ruining some perfectly good food.Always cover your food before refrierating.Practice these standards and the become automatic.

I have heard that some foods are okay to cover up as left over foods and some foods are not good to keep as a leftover item. Whenever I do keep something for a leftover, I always cover them up whether in a plastic container or aluminum foil. I hate to waste food so I do keep leftovers but try to eat them as soon as possible.

The thing that makes food go off is contact with oxygen, which starts the decay process. So covering food would slow that down, as you don't let the air in. The same thing applied to bread, if you tied up in a plastic bag so the air doesn't get to it, it lasts longer.

I cover everything, even if it's going into the refridgerator. I do it to prevent anything from falling into the food, but some of these other replies have been very enlightening too.

I cant imagaine anyone not covering food that is put in the fridge. It gets hard on top and absorbs flavors from other foods if it is not covered. I would never put food in the fridge without something on top. I often use a plate or saucer to cover them with.

I don't see this as an issue of whether they age the same or not. Uncovered food will absorb oder and bacteria from the air in the refrigerator and I don't like that idea. Keeping an open partial box of baking soda in the refrigerator can help that though. Personally I do cover any leftovers I am putting in the refrigerator for more then an hour or so.

i always cover the left over food in the refrigerator, because bacteria and germs can easily multiply if the food is exposed.

I cover everything so it will not dry out or spill all over and to stop the food from picking up odd flavors.

Well, that is just so interesting. I did not know that. I cover my food because I don't like it when the fridge starts to smell and stuff.

It's better to cover food It keeps oxygen away from it so it will spoil more slowly, it keeps the food from drying out, and also can keep it from absorbing odors from other foods.

Is that so? I'm not sure coz the foods that I cover definitely stay fresh and edible for a longer time than the ones I don't cover. The uncovered ones go bad sooner. Maybe this applies only to very perishable food stuff, i.e. foods that have a specific consumption time limit. Covered or uncovered they still go bad.

I would stay away from that and keep my food covered! Better safe than sorry!

I always cover my left over food to keep it from drying out and also to protect it in case something spills on it. I have three children and quite often they knock things over in the fridge and hardly ever clean up the mess they've made. We end up with a lot of left overs and I would hate to eat them if something else had been spilled on them.

left over food in the fridge should be covered and dated with date it went in and a use by date of a maximum of 2 days. This to prevent the build up of bacteria and cross contamination. Food should never be left in tin cans when they have been opened this is because the exposure to air makes the molecules in the can pass into the food and this is toxic.
