I want to start my fish tank up, but which is better? salt water or fresh water fish? I like the colorful fish like neons, but husband calls them sissy fish..What is the best kind of fish to get when I decide fresh water or salt?Which is easier to keep the tank clean?

I've had both, the salt water fish are alot of work, but have some really pretty fish. The fresh water fish do indeed make a mess of the tank, but if you purchase the really small snails (we accidentlly acquired them while buying some fresh seaweed for the tank ) those snails multiply, but keep the tank sparkling..No up keep, which is my prefrence.

I think both types of fish tanks are great; however, if you are planning to have a salt water tank the tank needs to be larger than a fresh water tank. My suggestion go to your local fish store with your husband to view the fish, as there are beautiful salt and fresh water fish. I do have one question. What size fish tank do you have now? This will help all of us answer your questions easier.

Since you are a beginner to fishkeeping, PLEASE do not start off with a salt water tank. the cost of setting up one of these tanks itself is quite a burden to bear, and, since you are a beginner, and are probably unfamiliar with filtration, feeding and the likes, it would be PERFECT for you to start with a freshwater tank. I recommend that you start off with a 10 gallon aquarium. You would need to get some gravel to begin with. Wash thoroughly, and have about 3-4 inches of gravel for your tank. The gravel should be 1-2mm in diameter. If you want a planted tank remember to provide adequate lighting, two 18-watt fluorescent tubes should suffice, if the tank is heavily planted. Put in decorative bogwood, stones and such.(Get these from a pet shop, DO NOT collect it yourself!) After planting, provide filtration, should be adequately powerful to move the water in the entire aquarium. Wait 2 days, and introduce some cheap goldfish. Monitor ammonia levels, and, when at suitable levels, introduce a; 1. Shoal of maybe 10-15 neon tetras (they are not sissy, just very beautiful) 2. 5-6 angelfish 3. 5-6 dwarf ram cichlids 4. 10 black neon tetras This should suffice. Please, do not take this as your guide to creating an aquarium. Get a book, and start from there. Attempt a saltwater aquarium only after you have acquired the necessary level of skill and experience. Your aq. will need constant filtering and maintenance, read up! Hope I could help!!!

I prefer salt water fish but they are alot harder to take care of and keep alive. Fresh water fish seems to nasty up the tank alot more than salt water fish. I would try salt water first and see how it goes. Then try the fresh water after that if you want to.

I love salt water fish, I just love the way they look. And neon fish, aren't sissy fish. Haha. Tell your husband that he's a sissy fish.
