do you ever feel insulted when they check your paper money in front of you?

when you hand a bill to the clerk to pay at the store, and they're totally blatent about pen testing it right in front of you, doesn't that irk you a little bit? i know they have to with counterfeiting, but couldn't they be a little more discreet, instead of making a big display of the test? we have a store here that checks $1 dollar bills..i can't help but laugh at that one.

Well actually I have never been insulted by this because it has happened to me. I used to work at 7eleven and I recieve a 5 dollar counterfeit. even through it was only 5 dollars I got in trouble for this as the store only sees it as losing money. If you were put in that situation dont' you think you would want to make sure they are real instead of getting in trouble at work???? I have now been train to recognize the fake ones so unless these crooks get smarter then it ain't happenin to me any time soon.

i always thought the clerks should not be held responsible if one gets turned in.granted,it got past the person, but the one to blame is the counterfeiter.

yes but if you take it its your responsibilty. The money feels different and you should be able to tell the difference. When people take $50's that are fake the stores lose that money and when it starts to get higher and higher stores risk losing alot of money so how is it not the workers fault????

they should have some kind of insurance to protect against that.maybe there isn't such a thing, but there should be.

No, I don't take that personally at all. It usually happens with $100 bills and I know that they do it to everyone. If I was in a line and I was the only person they did it to then I might take offence but other that that I'm not bothered by it at all.

This is the same must the seller be insulted if i check the money before him. It`s something normal. And sometimes there are mistakes. It`s better to check the money and to corect the mistakes.

No it does not bother me, if fact if you had a counterfeit, it would not actually be your fault. More often than not you would have acquired it from a store yourself. From their side of the counter, if a cashier accepts a fake bill, because of fault in not checking it, it comes out of her/his pay check. We had 20.00 bills and 100.00 dollar bills being passed around in our town a few months ago and you could see, the flurry of activity everywhere you stopped in checking bills. As I understand it 5's and 10 dollar bills are now the new target for criminals as they are not checked as readily. I think 1's however are a little extreme but who knows perhape that particular store has had experience in that.

Making a display of the test seems unprofessional, and although I would try not to take it personally, at the same time, in all probability neither would I ever go back to that store! I've pen-tested bills as low as $10 USD myself, but always discreetly to protect my own privacy as well as out of consideration to the customer. There are so many nice stores selling things all over the world that in one lifetime a person could not shop at even a tiny fraction of them all, so there is no sense going back twice to a shop that doesn't make every effort to give each customer the best possible shopping experience as well as a good value for the money spent!

Hello sid556, and no, it might not be possible to swipe the bill without anyone seeing, but instead of doing it up on top of the counter, I used a little ledge below the cash register, and made sure that I was pleasant with the customer throughout the process. Yes, it was often busy, but rather than cutting corners on the service, I simply thanked the people in line for their patience in waiting and did the swiping in a less obvious manner than I have seen some others do. Thank you scarlet_woman for the BR, by the way ;-)

Discreet as in no one else sees you checking this person's bill? And how would one go about doing that in a busy store? Most clerks, myself included, just take the pen and swipe the bill. That's about as discreet as you can be I think.

Actually, believe it or not, this has never happened to me. I don't buy things with big bills, which is what gets checked most often here. I can't afford to buy anything expensive enough that I would need to use a big bill. But, I do work in retail and I have seen cashiers check bills in front of the customers. They need to do this so that if the bill is in fact counterfeit the store does not lose money and the counterfeiter gets caught right then and there. I wouldn't be offended in the least to have my money checked for fraudulence.

I never looked at it like that before (the store being "punished"), but I see your point. I can't speak for other retailers, but the company I work for allots a certain amount of money for losses like stolen items and fraudulent monies. There's only so much a business can do to stave off the criminals. They come in all shapes and sizes, so bill checking is just part of the loss prevention process and not to be taken personally. Good question by the way :o)

Not at all. Let me relate a short story. I was working part time at a local McDonalds. I was also to check the bills $20 and larger with the pen. Busy as hell one day and I hadn;t done this. The next day I was informed I had accepted a counterfiet 20 dollar bill. Signing the application stated I was liable for any counterfiet money if not checked as I recieved it. So I learned the hard way that checking for counterfiet money is the right thing for cashiers to do so they don't have to pay for it. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I check anything over a fiver. I am not going to get stuck with fake money or have it go through to a deposit. I did have one scare with a customer that was paying with hundreds and all of them came up as counterfeit. Turns out someone left the cap off the marker and the ink that was used went bad so no matter what you wrote on, it looked like the bill was fake.

I haven't got that before. We don't have this pen testing done here - I don't even know what's that? I did get once when that lass checked the signature on my card to see if it matches. Well I felt like keeping that card clean (I can't remember why lol) so I didn't sign on it. So since she can't match my signature, she sort of insisted that I sign at the back of my card. That was the first time another ever matched the signature. I do agree that it is a good basic precaution but I nevertheless had an impression she was picking on me (though there wasn't anyone else in the queue and she didn't check the guy before her!!)

hi wizard:) the pen they go across our bills with-i forget how it does it exactly but i think it's a chemical color change if it's fake. you know, now that you mention it,i don't think i've ever been asked to check signature either. kind of scary in a way.

Generally speaking they are just doing their job the way management wants it done. No it does not bother me, I have nothing to hide, my money is real, why should it bother me. Finally, the one dollar bill is the most commonly faked bill, why, people like you who will take a stack to 10 to 20 of them without a thought that they might be fake, after all, why bother. For those that fake the dollar bill it is about just a little more, after all faking millions of dollars is just a little hard to hide.

Hard to say what it would cost to make, get the paper, has close as they can, then all you need is a high quality lazer printer, then mix in some good bills. Remember it may not just be about the money, looking for a thrill.

I wish that there was a way for the cashiers to be able to check the money without annoying the customers. I worked as a manager of a gas stations for a number of years. There were times that I had to speak to a few customers who were insulted that they cashier had checked the bills that the customer gave them. The cashier was just doing her job she didn't mean to offend anyone. I would often explain to them that the cashier had to maek sure that the camera saw them checking the bills so that they didn't get into trouble for failing to do their job properly. Even if the gas station was to have insurance to cover this kind of loss who do you think would have to really pay for it? The customer would. It would mean that prices would have to be raised to cover the extra expense. So to save the customers money the cashiers must verify that they money they are recieveing for the goods isn't counterfeit.

i'd actually be willing to pay a little bit more in truth-the stores shouldn't have to get stuck with it-it's not fair to them either. that explains something else though-it wasn't the same incident, but i saw a cashier hold up a $100 bill from some else.i was kind of confused as to what she was doing at the time-but it must have been for the camera.

I don't really feel insulted as I appreciate it is a necessary evil these days but I do get a bit fed up when they insist on checking every single note, of the guy in front of me in the queue. It always seems to take such a long time, and always when I am in a hurry. I've only ever had one dud note, and that was given to me at the bank!!!!!

Hi scarlet_woman! Don't get insulted, it's just a precaution on their side. Sometimes, when counterfeit money is identified, usually the custodian is held liable to replace it, or it is taken against their salary. With the current situations now, even counterfeit $1 would not be a surprise. Anyhoo, just put humor in the situation. Once you receive your change, examine the change money, scrutinize it the same way as the cashier/clerk did, and after you notice him/her looking at you with the same face you gave earlier, give him/her a nice smile!! Cheers!

I have had that happen a bunch of times and asked about it. A one point they were doing it with all 50's they received as there was ascam they had been alerted to at our superValu. Another time, at the banana shop, I gave them a 50 and they left the till to go do some sort of test on it in the staff room. I don't know if it was machine or chemical but it was pretty embarassing and that checker has always been really nice to me ever since the incident.

It doesn't bother me any. Now checking 1's...that's a bit rediculous. Be careful at check cashing places. An acquaintance cashed a check and later deposited some of the cash at her bank. They later contacted her because $200 of it was counterfeit. She went back to the check cashing place and they told her that she could not prove they gave her those bills, so she is out the money!

I am not insulted when the check the money I gave them. They are only doing their jobs. Plus I see it as a benefit to me as well. Not only are the making sure that I don't past counterfeit bills to them but they are making sure that they don't past counterfeit bills to me as well. Atleast I am assured that they money they gave back is real.
