How much clutter do you have?

Curiosity has gotten the better of me. How much clutter do you have? Can you fill a 6'x6' room, a single car garage, a two story barn or should you just have your own football field? By clutter, I am referring to things that you are saving, stashing or collecting that you only occasionally use, need or see. Not your everyday things that you use and not Christmas or Holiday decorations. Is your clutter organized or just tossed or boxed randomly? Do you (gasp) pay for extra storage at those You-Store type places lol? Now the biggest question....Why? Why do you save that stuff? Not criticizing...just asking. I have one closet (3'x 6') that is storage. Most of it is things from my childhood, my nephew and niece, and crafting things. I save them b/c they are small pieces of my past that bring back fond memories. My mother would need her own football field. She has two large bedrooms upstairs, a one-car garage, 2 8'x8' storage buildings, 2 single size trailers, 5 rental storage buildings plus the thousands of boxes in her home that are stacked everywhere. I must add that about half of this is my grandmothers who lives with her now. It is stacked, tossed, bagged and shoved wherever it will fit...she is our family packrat lol. I'm not sure why she saves it all though I'm sure, like myself, some of it is treasured pieces of her past. Your turn lol. LIVE IN PEACE

I am a terrible hoarder and we also do Dark age reenactment so our house is constantly full of junk. As I look around our bedroom I see piles of wool, reindeer and goat skins, sewing boxes and half finished clothing. Its a nightmare because non of us are very tidy at all and stuff just gets piled everywhere. We've managed to deal with some of the dark age stuff by putting our shields on the wall and filling a display cabinet with our other stuff like helmets and weapons. This all looks great especially when visitors come round. We use alot of storage boxes and put them up the attic which is only a major problem when you need to find that something that you knew you might need one day and can't remember which box its in.

I've never heard of Dark Age reenactment but it sounds interesting. Maybe clear plastic tubs would help...then you could see inside them easier? Thank you for responding and good luck with your hoarding lol. LIVE IN PEACE

Is "Dark Age" reenactment anything like Renaissance Festival stuff? We do a lot of that and really enjoy it. We make our own costumes and gather lots of fascinating props for using it too. Just curious.

I clean up my house everyday, but I have to admit that I have clutter that I really need to get rid of.My clutter is papers, books, cards, letters, and beauty supplies.I thought I had a lot of it until I read your post. I clean up everyday but I have a hard time getting rid of clutter. Everytime I throw paper away I get more paper. I made it a goal to throw something away everyday. I feel a little sad when I throw things away, why, I don't know. I am very sentimental. I have all 300 of my wedding cards,I just threw away 7 years worth of Christmas cards except for 10 of them, I still have obituaries, graduation invitations,my graduation cards from High school and College. I am going to eventually get rid of it. It might make it easier if I just leave the house and ask my husband to throw away all of my cards. The papers that I have are organized in a plastic box but I really don't need the paper. As far as the books I still have half of my college text books. I need to get rid of it. I thought that I might need it just in case but in 7 years I have not used it.

Gosh....you'd better not ask. I saved almost everything (past, present and future). Let see, we have 2 small barn, 1 small ship container storage, 2 house barn, an old camper and we have to even hired a rental storage outside the house. While my house is simple and empty....all of those space are packed and full with alot of stuff...both from me and my husband. While my father in law just as worsed as us. Since my mother in law passed away couple of years ago....he changed 3 extra bedroom in his house as a storage, 1 barn, lotsa closet. My husband and my father in law will just tossed everything everwhere. While I tend to organized them neatly and put them in box so I can have more space to put more stuff/clutter...hehehe

I hate clutter, and I'm always trying to get rid of it. I have a few problem areas like the kitchen, where I have a lot of gadgets and utensils. I use them all, so I can't really get rid of them. I'm in the process of redoing my kitchen, and plan on getting new cabinets that I can organize easier. My computer desk is another problem area that I'm constantly trying to declutter. I keep my mail, catalogues, printer paper, and other computer supplies, and everything seems to pile up fast.

Nope--I tend to be a neat freak..I HATE clutter...I'm always going through things, especially accumulated papers and tossing out what I no longer need. Last year I did a thorough and I mean thorough going through the two closets I have...now both weren't cluttered with junk, just things accumulated over the years...well I did a real job on them and I was amazed at how many things I was able to get rid of--I would come across things and it was like why the heck am I keeping this or that? So out it went..for the first time in years I can actually see the bottoms of both closets...LOL...and I've kept them clutter free since

I know this is an old discussion, but I just had to respond to it!! If you give me the space, I'll fill it! I can save some junk!!! I moved out of my mothers house about 12 years ago - and I still have stuff there!!! I do try to go through it and get rid of what I can, but some of it is hard to part with - kids drawings, homework, crafts... Then I have my crafts - half of our walkin closet - puzzles, games, computer stuff, paperwork (I hate doing paperwork, so it just sits for a while...). Oh, and BOOKS... I have BOXES of books... Most of 'em I've read, but a lot of them were my fathers.

I don't have much clutter. I can't stand stuff to be all over the place like that. Now, my husband he would save every little thing if I let him. We have a room in the back of our house that I don't usually go in. He has all kinds of junk in there and I always leave that door closed. When I do go in that room I bring stuff out to toss in the trash everytime. He gets so mad but I just can't help it cause I can't stand clutter. I told him he can't keep everything like he does and he just needs to go through everything and throw stuff away. If he doesn't clean that room out soon then I'm going in there and then he won't have much left. lol

I have some in each room but at least there is nothing on the floor where someone could trip over it. My clutter is mainly on counters or dressers or the coffee table.

I have hardly any clutter at all...which is a good thing because that leaves more room for my wife to keep her clutter. Most of my stuff is on my desk, except for a tub of computer parts and wires and cables in a closet...buried under some clutter of you know who...:)

We have a 10x12 shed full of stuff right now. Some of the stuff is stuff that we might not ever use again, but it's like your stuff, and holds nice memories from the past. Some of it is also holiday and seasonal decorations. Most of what we have stored in our storage building is baby stuff. We have a 20 month old, and eventually plan on having at least one more child. Our son is a little bit spoiled, and has LOTS of stuff. His crib, bassinet, jumperoo, infant car seats, playpen, walker, changing table, etc are all out in storage. Along with several boxes of toys and several more full of clothes. We didn't get rid of anything really as he outgrew it. We just put it in storage. We know we will eventually be using most of it again.

I do not have much clutter. I have a childrens furniture set - table, chair, dresser and dollsbed - that my grandfather made and painted story book firgures on for me when I was three. other than that i have two medium size boxes of things that mean something special too me. letters from my greatgrandmother, paperdolls my mom has made, stuff like that. I truly believe that things that you have not used or looked at during a two year period you really do not need. So I do not keep much clutter around. There is enough clutter in my mind - I do not need it outside my head as well.

Well I guess I am the pack rat according to both of my daughters. I really need to organize it at least. But with working 50-60 hours a week, that seldom gets touched. It is hard enough to keep up with the everyday clutter to dive into the others to organize.

Yes, it is hard to find the time to do it. I try to do little spurts while I'm doing something else. Like cleaning out a kitchen drawer while I'm working on dinner. Good luck with it and thank you for responding. LIVE IN PEACE

I see this is an old discussion, I just wanted to say thanks for the chuckle. I realy liked the part about needing your own football field. My mom is a pack rat, she has tons of stuff. I have too much stuff too, but no where near as bad as her. I moved 2 years ago, so I threw away tons of stuff. My neighbor is a pack rat too, anything I didn't want he said put over the fence. Tons of stuff went over the fence, haha. I even had to rescue a few treasures that the granddaughter was tossing over there.

I unfortunately have to much clutter. Its my new years resolution every year to get rid of my clutter, but it never happen. I have a room right now with stuff to sell on Ebay on my church plus craft stuff in bags. I need to purchase some organizers to get things in order.

I might need a closet for my clutter. I am really good at staying organized and getting rid of things I do not need. Ebay has helped with that, and so has my paper shredder. There is just no need to keep things that don't serve a purpose for me!!

Well lets see, we have a walk up attic, that if you stacked all the stuff that is stored up there together would only take up a 3rd, we have a basement, but for the most part there is only camping stuff stored down there, and we have a small storage building, which is mostly lawn stuff, tools, the ac's we use in the summer, and spare tires, I have a seperate set of snow tires for winter. My parents on the other hand.....are similar to your's sounds like, they have 3 storage buildings, a huge room (that isn't finished that is packed with stuff) and several walk-in closets, not to mention the 3 boats, 2 extra cars, camper trailer, school bus, omg, I could go on, but that's another story LOL

OH NO!!! Not confession time!! Gasp.. OK, first there was the move from my own house to my dad's to care for him. So, except for furniture my clutter from a two bedroom mobile home ended up in a bedroom (about 10X12) at my mom's old house which we now use for storage. Then my dad passed and I lived in his 3 bedroom house alone for three years, so add my new clutter there plus lots of his old stuff. THEN, I moved here to my mom's house, got rid of almost all my dad's stuff (it's much easier to part with someone ELSE's clutter, right?). So, now my family must move aagain as this house is legally my aunt's (we rent) and she is selling it soon. So now I have the room mentioned before stacked head high with boxes of my JUNK from both houses (yes, it must be junk, cause some haave not been unpacked in ten years lol). But now I am going through it again, with eyes towards moving again and I am simply too lazy to take all of it with me in a bazillion trips with my little Toyota. But I came by it naturally, since we have decided my mom will move into a new apartment being added onto my sister's house (or move with me), we've had to go through HER clutter.. She has about 500 sq ft of this house (if you pushed it all together) upstairs, a 1000 sq ft basement and two garage sheds (probably another 20X40 ft worth) of stuff. I have thrown out newpapers from the 70s, three big boxes of plastic grocery bags (heaven knows we might run out of those, right?) 6 coffeemakers (that don't work), 3 vacuums (again, nonworking) and a 50 gallon fish tank from my nephew's fish when he was 5 (he's 26 now). oh, and don't forget the set of tires from our old Rambler station waagon (jeepers mom, they have dry rotted down there for pity's sake, even if you could FIND a Rambler to put them on). We had to buy a trash dump sticker cause so much junk can't go with the regular trash. And that doesn't even begin to count my dear brother's 1200 sq ft garage full of tools, auto parts, fishing stuff, motors, girlie posters, etc. Then we gete to the baack-of-the-garage yard. Let's see 4 cars, 3 boats, 2 trucks, 1 tractor (none work, he's gonna work on them SOMEDAY). So, if you count us all together, we can give your mom a run for her title of Clutter Queen.
