How do you have your meals?

Family Meal - Happy family meal.

When you and your family (or whoever lives with you or visits you often) are at home during lunch time, for example, do you eat together, calmly on the living room table? Or you just grab your plate and go to the couch to eat while you watch TV? Maybe you even eat while you respond to discussions here on myLot? Some families have the habit of having "family meals", where everyone sits together and have a usually long meal, while they talk. This only happens in my house when we have someone over, but it's not a tradition. Do you think it's important (and even healthier) to sit together with people you like during meals? Thank you, guys!:)

We sit at the table together for dinner most of the time. I believe in food in the kitchen and at the table. No tv, games or toys. That is family time. Being as busy as we are we need the family time so we can communicate.

We can do that once in a while too, but not everyday. It was always like that. My dad would always go to the couch to eat, so it's pretty normal to me. :)

I never grew up sitting at the table with my family. We just didn't. We either sat in front of the tv or I ate in my room or I at at the table with my mom. I think it was just because we couldn't get along with each other when we were all in the same place at the same time for very long periods of time. When I got married, my husband's family sat down at the table for every meal together and I realized then just how important it was. It was a time for everyone to sit down and discuss what have gone on that day. So, now that I have a daughter, I have made it a priority for us to all sit down as a family and eat our meals. Even though she is only two, I think she enjoys that time that we all sit down and talk and laugh. It is nice to have that moment everyday to just stop and spend time with her and my husband.

Hhmm... That's interesting! I get along very well with my family, and even then we opt for not having our meals together. In my boyfriend's house, everyone sits together to eat meals, and of course I do the same when I'm there. But I think I'd rather just grab my plate and go to the couch! Really! Hahaha! Of course I wouldn't do that as it's rude, but I feel like doing it at times.

We have our meals together all the time, its kinda become a habit with my family. If smone's nt present, we wait for him till he comes, and then start the proceedings. Its better to eat together as it strengthens family bonding. Also u get time to share ur thoughts which u may not have shared otherwise...

Most of the time we have dinner at the dinner table and then sometimes we eat together in the lounge. It's fun when we do that, eating together in the lounge. We put on something that we all can watch and eat away. It all depends really what mood we are in and what we are eating. If it is takeout then its in the lounge. If i cook a heavy meal then its on the dining table.

The only meal that my fiance and I will usually eat together is dinner, because we're rarely together for any other meal. Even then, we usually sit together on the couch and eat with the TV on. Our dining room table is too full of stuff for us to eat there. We will still talk while we eat dinner, so it's not too bad. I grew up eating at a table with my family, but now my fiance and I only do that for special occasions. It might change if/when we have kids.

I've read it's good for the kids when everyone get together during meals. Well, I never had that, but I didn't think it was harmful for me! xD

We have our own table manner, which is the way we teach our child as well. For quick breakfast, meal or a snack, normally we will eat in the kitchen table. We don’t like to grab the plate and go to the couch to eat while watching TV, as the food crumb may drop to the floor that we have to clean afterwards. If we have visitors or other family members with us, we will eat at the dinning table. Besides, we will lay the table with the better cutlery and tableware to honour the guests.

When I read you post, I realized I made a mistake on my post... It's not living room table, it's dinning room table, right? I remember of seeing this subject in my English classes... :)

we are pretty laid back here and most times we eat wherever in the house. Occassionally we have a sit down meal which is also very cool....we set up the table..candles and all and make it just a family thing. In the winter we do this once a week. In the summer everyone is so busy doing their stuff that it tends to be just random.

well...i have breakfast with my parents, and we watch the news on tv.. at lunch i usually eat with my mother, because my father is at work, but it depends on his work...however we eat slowly, and we talk...at dinner is more calm, because me and my family are all in the same room, so we watch tv and eat togheter at the same table.

With my family it is pretty hard to get everyone to even sit in the living room to watch tv together. Never mind having an actual meal together in the house that is. With my hubby working 4-midnight and my oldest son with football practice 3 times a week an hour and a half away from home. It is usually me home with the baby alone. As a family we have made it a point to spend the weekend alone together as a unit, but that doesn't include meal time. Due to our lifestyles our eating schedules are conflicting. My dinner time with the baby is about 5pm, my older son's dinner time is about 9:30pm and my hubby's dinner time is around 8:30pm. I say that eating dinner together as a family unit is a great thing if it fits, but to us spending time watching a movie, or heading out to the park to play ball, or even texting each other is a better way for us to communicate.

We try to sit down and eat together, but it's tricky because we work at different hours, and sometimes we're just hungry at different times or want to do different things. But I think it's important to sit down as a family.

Up until I was eleven years old, my family ate together around the table. Then my mother got really sick and everything changed. Now, I live on my own, but it is just me. I don't have room for a kitchen table, so I eat sitting on the couch surrounded by two begging puppies. : )

As much as possible we have our family's meals sitting together, eating on the dining room table. I believe its important for a family to sit together while having meals for its brings closeness for every member and a healthier relationships. I thinks meal/dinner is the best time to be spent together since all of us are almost often busy working or doing our own things.

well,in my case, i study in Pakistan and my family lives outside...so whenever i go back home, then i try my best to eat with my family as much as possible....its so great to have family for lunch, and i literally miss that so much when i return to pakistan......:( i think those who have a good chance to have lunch or any other meal with family, then they should make the most out of it....

eating together at meals reinforces the bond between family members, between father and son, between child and parent. It is necessary that parents spend at least an hour a week with their children. If they cant spend that much, they cant influence their children much. We spend lunch and dinner together when we are at home, breakfast is not spent together since we dont wake up at the same time.
