when i had my first child i wouldn't except anything other than new clothing and items but then my second came around and i was introduced to the world of second hand children stores, ebay and hand me downs and well i dont know what i was thinking with my first. I still buy new for my children and at time over buy but im also always keeping an eye out on ebay or our local second hand children stores not to mention freely welcoming the hand me downs. and im just curious to how you do things!

I know exactly what you mean! I was the same way with my first, I refused anything that was even remotely second hand which now that i look back on it, was inexcusably snooty of me lol. With my second I was happy to get anything that was presentable and he fit into lol, It's much easier to buy second hand and cheaper too! so now, although I buy new from time to time like school uniforms, I'm always keeping an eye out on those bargains!

hey i think you are doing it right thats how i do it too. you can find good stuff even at yard sales too. and dont forget that when your kids grow out of theirs you can turn a round and sale them to second hand stores.

I was the exact same way with my first!!! Nothing used...always the best of everything. I think that came from being a young mother (18) as I felt I had something to prove to everyone that looked down on me for having a child so young!!! If she was dressed perfectly and her hair was perfect and all my baby stuff was perfect...would people have a different opinion of me...knowing that she was being more than taken care of. Weird...but that was my thought of mind at the time. my son comes along later on...and I LOVE hand me downs. I get excited if anyone passes stuff down to me!!!! I do go and buy him new stuff as well...but the majority of his stuff is good, clean hand me downs!!!

I marked you best response because i think you hit my reasons for doing the same with my first born right on the head, i too was a young mom 19 and i think i in some way felt the need to prove that i was responsible, i could handle a child etc so i can definetly relate to you!

I just have one child, and he has had hand me downs since he was born. I do buy a lot of clothes new for him, but they are usually on sale or on clearance, or for a special occasion. My mom loves to buy my son clothes at yard sales. I went home in June (I live over 1000 miles from my parents) for my sister's wedding. My mom had bought my son a new outfit for the wedding, and a few new winter outfits that were on clearance in the spring. She had also bought him three medium size boxes full of jeans and shirts for this fall through next spring. There were a couple of jackets and sweatshirts, but mostly just jeans and long sleeve shirts. Anyway, she pretty much finished up my winter shopping for me. I bought him 4 pairs of jeans on ebay, and now his winter wardrobe is complete, assuming he doesn't shoot up into 3T anytime soon (he still wears a lot of 12 months, but mostly 18 months now, so I don't think he will, he's 19 months old).

yes,in our city, there is an old tradition that new born babies should have some clothes that are passed down from relatives'.and the baby will be healthier and stronger.i think it has some reasons, the second-hand clothes are washed several times, they are soft. you can use hot water to kill the virus.

I like that tradition, and your right about the worn in softness to used clothing i too like that they seem more confortable than starchy and stiff new items

i agree. the first child everything was new, and now i go to garage sales and use all hand me down clothes. it is easy for me though, 2 girls. it is also easier with the second child, you know how big to get clothes for next year when the season of clothes goes on clearance. brand new clothes at a discount price!

I do accept the used clothes from my sisters sons but not from others. In fact I give away the used clothes to charity once a year. What I accept from sister is those clothese which are new, but just cannot fit her son.

I mostly buy new stuff for my kids. But with my first child I did use some hand me down from relatives. The second one has hand me downs from his brother as well as relatives and friends. He also gets brand new stuff. I'm not comfortable buying from second hand stores. I'd rather borrow from people I know or else get brand new stuff.

when my children was growing up, I had five mind you, I couldn't afford brand name clothes, I always got their clothes at salvation or other second hand places. Then I was able to go to a store and get them brand name, Today, I feel second hand is better due to the prices of the items now a days. It is getting too expensive to dress our kids, so second hand items come in handy. have a good day

I was the same way as you!! With my daughter I didn't even consider buying used things, but when my son came along it is like the more free/cheap stuff you can get the better!! I buy almost all of my kids clothes used now, Ebay is greta for finding certain things that my daughter wants. She is older and into certain things so it is super easy to type in her size and like "Bratz" for some fun shirts for her.

its funny how that works, when were first time parents we have this idea that nothing is too good for our baby but as they get older their needs get more expensive and more children come we realize its important to save money when ever we can!

well for me.. Eventhough I find it very affordable I don't go for used clothes especially for my kids. It is because children are very vulnerable to skin deseases, and you simply do not know if the owner of the clothes they are selling doesn't have any skin desease or communicable desease, second is, I strongly insist that I WORK HARD because of my kids, so why give them a second hand??

With my first I was financially forced to only buy a few new outfits and to cope with all the second hand clothing (in fantastic condition might I add) that I could afford. He always was clothed beautifully and I learned that second-hand clothes are fine! I now buy all of my kids clothing second hand or they get it for their birthday brand new. They appreciate what they have and we can spend the money we didn't use buying expensive brand name clothing new, on fun outings for the whole family. I make sure that I hand all good condition items on to family or friends and even list some to sell online on www.oztion.com - love that place it rocks!

well it depends if where they are going to use it.... i mean my kids are in their early teens and of course i want them to use brand new clothing. but if they need some costumes at school programs it would be much better if they just get something from used already. i mean they are just going to wear it once then it is okay for them to buy it on used shop.

I know my kids out grow their clothes long before they wear them out. I try to shop at the second hand shops as often as possible. I have found great items at great prices. I work to hard for my money to throw it all away. Plus second hand items can be put to use instead of ending up in the landfill so it is better for the environment too.

I don't have kids yet but i think I'll do the same when I have mine soon. I could even used some hand me downs from my nieces and nephews and there is nothing wrong with that. It is actually saving and the reason why we save is also for thier future. :)

My nephew use to have used clothes from his cousins in the US and he is very happy to have them. I am glad that he has cousins like them who is very thrifty and gives their used clothes to him. They also give him brand new clothes.

I dont mind hand me down from people that I know but I dont like buying second hand clothes. I get lots of things for my son from my sister from her boys and what I dont have I buy new. It does not have to be the most expencive things or best brands as long as they are new. I get lots of things on specials when the season is over and I get a larger size and keep them for next year.
