My daughter is getting a new computer from her father. She has the choice to give her old one to a family member or to sell it to a family member. Which do you think she should do?

Honestly, I think it would be nicer for her to give it to someone. She's getting a new one as a gift so why not give the old one as a gift. I know if my brother got a new one I would want his old one, but not have to pay. I do think ultimatly though it's up to her. You could just try to make her unerstand it would be nicer to give it to someone, as opposed to making family pay.

It is her choice and I am hoping she will give. Then it shows I have brought her up right! Thanks

I think it is better for your daughter to give her old computer ro someone else. As nowadays computer updates so fast and old computer won't cost much any more. You may sell it in a very low price and that means nothing. If you sell it, when it doesn't work or have some problems, perhaps the buyer (even if he/she is your family member) will call you to solve it. So it is very bothering. Therefore, you give it to your family member and he/she will really appreciate to it. And it seems it will make everybody happy.

Yeah she did end up giving it to her little brother and everyone is happy with that. However if comes a time we decide to sell it, she will get the money which everyone thinks is fair. So all is good! Thanks

I think it is better to give the computer to your family member as a gift.If you sell the old computer, the resale value is very less and you will get small amount for your computer..If you give this computer to your family member ,they will become more happy. But,make sure that the computer is in proper working condition or not.If you give a damaged computer then it is not good.

I think she should sell it, although it might sound rude or something, but I believe that we need to teach our children to be more practical in life. Why should she just give it away if she can earn some extra pocket money. Well, she can sell it just for a few dollars, she doen't need to ask a lot of money for it, but she need to get at least something. At least $25 will be good.

Thanks a lot for your view, she did end up giving it to her little brother, but if we end up selling it later, she will get the cash.

hi,vicki, I also once had an old computer and I gave it to my brother. I think it's better to give it as a gift rather than selling.

Well, if it were me, I would just give it to the family member. But that's just the way our family is...we are always giving things to each other, passing them down from one person to the next until they are worn out. We enjoy helping each other out in any way we can.

I say she should just give it instead of selling it since it is family, but I can see that everyone else here seems to be on the ball about family situations.

Giving it to someone in need would magnify the joys of having a new one. And this feeling would not have any monetary value at all. But of course, if you need that money, selling it at a lower price would do. It depends on you and your daughter actually.

Hi vicki! I will recommend that she give it out to someone for free, not neccessarily a family member, but whoever she feels will deserve it. I will never advice here to sell it out cos her father who wants buy new computer for her is not demanding for her money, he wants to give it to her for free. Thanks

Am I missing the point here? She can either sell or give it to a family member? Well no doubt she should sell it. Why not allow her to make a little pocket money to herself?

Of course you are always going against the norm, but that is why I love reading your posts so much! I understand it would be nice to get some pocket money, but then I think it would also be nice to give the old one to her little brother. I am going to let her make up her own mind without my opinion at all. Thanks Kim!

Hmm, for me, it depends if she'll sell it to a family member that have money enough or not. And if it is for someone that is with less money and possibilities than your family is, I will tell her to give it for free. If the family member has enough cash, she could get a small amount to place in her savings account maybe ;) TheFortunes

I'd give the computer. Plus depending on the computer you won't get a good price on it even among family :D

I think that she should give it to a family member instead of selling it. She is getting a new one, and does not need it. However, should she choose to sell it, I think she should give them a very good deal.

Yeah I think if she was to pick selling, it would be a very very good deal. I am leaving it up to her to choice. But I am favoring giving, as she has been given as well. Thanks lilybug!

It would be really generous of her to give her computer as a gift to a family member. That family member will always remember that gift and she is guaranteed to be repaid for her kindness with a kind act in the future.

Sweet and true. I have been given things and always remember the people who did it. Also it inspires me to be a giver too. Thanks!
