Now that Autumn is here a lot of people are experiencing more grey days, days where the sun doesn't come out - I know. I know :) In many areas of the globe things are not exactly like that and I envy you LOL Does this affect you at all? Are you prone to the "winter blues"? I have always been affected when there is less sunlight. My mood changes, even my eating habits change a bit. But hey, I'm not alone. SAD - seasonal affective disorder is recognized worldwide. It is described as a type of clinical depression that appears certain times of the year. Usually starting around Fall and continuing throughout the winter while there is less sunlight. It can take different forms and be more or less severe but in general people affected feel somewhat depressed, have less energy, have a need to sleep more and experience problems waking up in the morning, and can even change food habits and gain weight. SOme suggestions I was given by my doctor include : spend more time outdoors during the day to maximize sunlight exposure, keep the curtains open during the day, make a habit of taking a daily walk at the time where the sun is out and as a joke he even told me that if all else fails to take a vacation to someplace warm and sunny LOL MY symptoms are not too severe, but enough to bother me. What about you, are you affected by the lack of sunlight? shorter days?

I'm not much into sunlight, but I love the morning sun between 6am to 8am. I don't like the mid-afternoon sun, since this is the time where the heat is intense. I think I am not affected by it, emotionally and physically. I feel more comfortable where the environment is cool, I can do freely whatever task I am about to perform.

I do understand about the heat. I"m with you sometimes special if it's hot and humid. But I'm not even referring to hot sunny days. A cool day but without clouds and a clear sky is perfect for me:) It's the sunlight itself more than the temperature for me:)

Yes I have noticed that as the weather gets colder and less sunshine is around that my mood has changed a bit.I do take herbs and things which really helps soI can control it but I do feel it and I am trying my best to get to eat well and do exercise to shift of any negativity or pulling down that I may feel.

OH I love rain. Specially the one that we can walk around without and umbrella. Just feeling the rain drops fall in our faces...I love that... but I like it when the rain is finished for the clouds to go away and the sun to shine LOL

I have never been diagnosed with SAD but yes I am affected by the lack of light. I tend to want to hybernate and I also tend to want to get everythig done in a hurry while the sun is still up. I too have trouble waking and feel ready for bed earlier. Sleepier! You gave a lot of good hints for helping with this problem. Another is to have a heat lamp or plant lamp it is sometimes called and sit under or near it for a while during gloomy days. I know a gal that does that and she says it helps. She also goes to a tanning booth in the winter, not just to tan but for the light and warmth. She never goes during the spring or summer.

Yes they even have special lights for that effect which I assume are just basically what you said a heat lamp or plant lamp, probably with another name so they can be more expensive LOL

The lack of sunlight bothers me when I leave for work and its dark and then I come home from work and it's dark again. It begins to feel like you never get to see the sun. I just get sleepy. Especially in the mornings when the alarm clock goes off and it's still dark out. It feels like you should still be sleeping. I try and get outside when the sun is shining and that helps wake me up a bit.

Yes, that was one of the suggestions the doctor gave me. Try to go out for a walk during the hours of sun. I think most people are affected but some just lightly, others more so.

Yes, it definitely affects me too. I have a light with a 100 watt light bulb in it and when I am feeling down I will take a good lighthearted book and sit under that light and read for a few minutes. It really makes a big difference in how I feel.

I too heard that it works. I do try to go out and really use the hours of sun no matter how little they are. The lamp sounds like a great idea.

That is good and if you live in a place where there are parts or the year that are a bit more grey it's great that you can deal with that without a problem. It's good that it doesn't affect everyone :):)

Yes, the lack of sunlight definitely affects me in winter. We are lucky in summer, & a lot in autumn & spring. Australia a great deal of sunshine. I became affected by this problem of lack of sunshine when I moved to Adelaide from the north. Adelaide has longer, & greyer winters. It took me a few years to realise that lack of sun affected me, & I too, get clinical depression. At one stage, I made a point of going to the far north for at least 1 to 2 weeks every winter, but this became unaffordable. When I started living with my hubby (now married) the situation improved, possibly because I was more focused, but I see it creeping back in every now & then.

I dont believe that if there are days when the sun doesnt come out then it affects me much since i have a very hectic work schedule barly having time to think about it.....work all day long......n after the days work ur tired so you just want to have a nice sleep at night without thinking about anything.Yeah that is there that if you have a bright sunny morning people feel energetic......dont known about the others but i do...it feels awesome with the sun shining brightly in the sky in the mornings and at miday that becomes to hot and untolerable but most of the time work does not give you the oppertunity to think about all this.I love eating so irrespective of the season i can eat in any weather so my eating habits dont get disturbed.Yeah if you dont feel energetic enough then yes you should make it a habit to walk daily that will help you a lot.Initailly starting with that then you could do some body warm ups......that will really keep you fit....and besides all this you must make sure you sleep in time so that you can wake up early in the morning that is sleep by around 11:30 maximum by 12 and wake up at 6:30 or 7 in the morning ....i'm sure thats gonna really make you feel better n its really gonna work in keeping you fit. Take care....n remain FIT N HEALTHY.

It is true, when we're busy we have less time to feel anything around us. I still feel it a bit but of course less than if I wasn't as busy. Walking is a very good exercise and - at least for me - something that helps relax so of course it's a good thing too :)

I guess I have SAD xD recently I really started to eat more and I feel sleepy and tired when during the day. But idon't have depression or anything:P It is true that when days are getting short and it's already dark at 5 p.m. it has bad influence on many people. So I'm always looking forward to shiny days in fall/winter season^_^

It can present itself in many different ways but the pattern is that it does happen as the days are shorter and we are exposed to less sunlight. I don't think I would go as far as saying I get depressed but my mood does change a bit in darker days.

Yes, I feel comfortable when I sit or stand under sun. If one day is a sunny day, I will be very happy and go out with my friends.

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons. I love the colors of the changing leaves and the way they rustle in the wind and blow around. I love the smell of autumn, crisp and clean. I love rainy days, maybe because I am such a water loving person, and I love green growing things around me and rain helps keep it that way. I am currently living in my brothers house in the mountains and the house is very dark. It can be pretty depressing on a gray day, so I have little tricks I do to keep myself in a cheerful mood: I have painted the walls in soft pastels and keep brightly colored accents, like beautiful scarves draped over lamps and hanging from the wall, I hang paintings that inspire good emotional responses in me, I do ritual type things that are comforting, like baking bread and creating delicious soups to simmer on the back burner of my stove with warm yummy smells wafting through the house, curling up with a good book or a fun jigsaw puzzle in front of the fire, any thing that promotes a sort of 'celebrating the season' mood. And of course I wouldn't miss my daily walk outside, even in the snow... well, it helps that my dog pesters me to no end if I try to skip the walk. And yoga and meditation has helped me tremendously. The short of it is that even on the grayest day I can still maintain a positive, even exhilarated, mood - and I used to spend months, even years at a time, depressed!

What a wonderful post! I love your ideas and you're right. When the environment around is is brighter so are we. YOga and meditation really help too, that I know :) Thanks for answering

only during rainy season, we find it difficult if there is no sunlight. Unlike western countries, USA and Canada, the climate here is not of that extreme type. We get sunlight almost throughout the year except during rainy days.

This is a problem that I face also. My problem isn't severe, but living in Southern California has been the solution to the problem. We have a lot of sunlight and great weather most of the time. One of my friends gains a lot of weight and has been considering moving here. She feels her life is out of control with large weight gains in the fall and winter and can't lose the pounds. I think life is to short to be depressed, so I'm living in a high cost area. Its not easy with all the bills, but I'm happy and enjoying life.

Yes. At least to me it does. Not only physically (everyone needs at least 7 mins of sun per day in order to fix calcium to their bones) but also mentally: on sunny days, I'm happier than on grey days...

Just like me. There is always this down feeling on grey days. I don't know if I feel it even more because until I came here I always lived in countries with lots of sunshine and warmth, but the fact is that it affects me a lot.
