Expired milk

Do you use milk after it is expired? I don't, I throw it away the day it expires, because I can't stand the thought of it being spoiled. But a friend of mine drinks it after it is expired. He says 'as long as it doesn't smell bad it's fine.' I disagree. My opinion is that the date is on there for a reason. What do you think?

The expiration date on the milk is merely the last day they can sell it. As long as the milk has been kept refrigerated it should be fine even a day or two after the date on the bottle. I am with your friend. As long as it smells ok, you should be fine drinking it.

the date put on the milk is just a guideline as when the milk may spoil.it is perfectly allright to use if it still smells o.k.most of these use by dates are just their to protect the seller.some milk may spoil before the use by date,i always smell the milk before i use it.cheers sue

You know, the date on the carton is a "sell-by" date and if your store takes proper care of their dairy products the milk should be good for another week to 10 days.

I agree with both you and your friend. I agree with you, that the date is there for a reason. However, the expiration date on the milk, or any other grocery item in a store, is not the date that it spoils. The expiration date is the last day that the store is allowed to sell the milk. So, I also agree with your friend. If the milk smells ok and taste ok, it is ok and you can still drink it.

wow... no, i beg todisagree... even if it smells ok and tastes ok, due to the factthat the expiry date was written and it is visible to the date that it is already expired, it is expired... no more no less, no excuses.

The expiration date is the last day the store can sell it, not the day the milk spoils. Read what it says by the expiration date. It says, "sell by _/_/_", whatever the date is. It does not say, "spoils on _/_/_". The store could not legally sell it on that day if it spoiled on that day. Therefore, the words, "sell by", show that it is the last day the store can sell the milk, not the day it actually spoils. It is usually good a few days past that date.

I agree with your friend if the milk doesn't smell or doesn't taste strange it is ok to drink it. The date is there for a reason but it's not like they can really know that the milk will expire now or in 2 hours or in another 2 hours. I wouldn't drink the milk that had expired 10 days ago but they it would probably smell anyway. And the expired milk is actually cheese so its not like its bad for your health or something like that.

expired milk is not good for human consumption. it can be used in plants as a manure. i put it in plants but never drink. it can cause loose motions and infection.

I don't like milk but i do know that the date on the milk package is just an indication. So if a date is expired you can still drink milk but first always check if it' still fluent if not you know it ain't good.Normally you can drink 1-2 days after the expired date. After that you can't.

Oh no!When it is expired it should be in the trash.I don't like to tighten my belt for food.It is too dangerous to bet your health on it.You talk about food poisoning or E-coli from dairy products...it is fatal. No, for me I won't keep it.I will throw it in a heartbeat!!!

I have heard as long as you keep it properly refrigerated (not in the door) it is ok for a week or so past the due date. I have kids so milk never goes to waste here and at $4.50 a gallon, yikes!

expiry dates are only designed as a gudeline anyway, so aslong as i doesnt smell bad i still drink or eat anything past the expiry.

I agree with your friend, I would drink it if it doesn't have a bad, sour taste. Sometimes you just can't digest it 100% ok, but other than that, If I can drink it and It tastes like It always did, I think It's OK to drink it.

i personally will still drink as long as it smells and tastes ok! i wouldnt want to waste money chucking something that is perfectly fine! sell by dates are just guidelines not a deffinate

I usually throw it away. But I know some people who make some kind of cheese with it and then make a sweet dish out of that. Wel, then I guess it's not wasting food and that's good. But since I don't know how to do it, I just throw it away.

I will never take expired milk. I have heard expired milk is really very poisonous and also it is dangerous to take. I can never think of taking spoiled milk.

Whenever I buy milk I make sure I buy it with a date that is far enough away so that it will be used before the actual date on the container. I've never had a problem with using it up before the expiration date...I have a family of four, after all, and since we all drink milk we never had this happen. However, there was a time I bought spoiled milk from the store. I brought it home, opened it up, and it stunk. The date was good, but for some reason the milk was not. I took it back to the store and got a new one. I didn't even need a receipt, though I brought it with me anyway. Since then I always smell the milk to make sure it is okay, even if the date says it is. I'm taking no chances. :P

Look at this label the next time you buy milk, it is a "sell by" date; generally, milk which is properly stored will remain good to use upto a week past this date. The date on the carton is the last date stores should be selling it.

manufacturers says three days after expiration it should not be consumed and dispose properly.that means goods are still good up to 3days upon expiration and can be consumed.but i dont use it after expiration better safe than never.but in my experience most commodities are still good after a few day after expiration.but i dont want to risk my health on it.
