Just heard on the news, that they are trying to pass a bill that restaurants are not allowed to serve obese people. What? If you are obese, you are not allowed to eat? Some people are obese due to medical conditions and reasons that they cannot help, so they should be punished? What is your take on this? I think it a big case of discrimination!! Is this still a free country?

I don't feel that our country is so free. More restrictions seem to be passed as time goes on, that interfere with our free choice. I remember back in grade school, when we were learning about communist Russia, that it was thought wrong of the Russian government to restrict what the citizens did, for their own good. Now our government seems to be getting into our private lives in similar ways. Even so, I don't think such a bill would pass. It is discriminatory to disallow people who are obese to eat in restaurants.

Are you f'ing kidding me or are you serious about that? I hope that this is a joke, because it's not funny at all. There are a lot of people, and I do mean a LOT of people in the US who are fat, and as you said, some are fat because of medical conditions and reasons that are out of their reach. I'm starting to find this kind of law offensive and discriminatory. It's just wrong, in a big, fat kind of way. Fat and obese people can't eat out at restaurants thanks to a bill or law saying so? Next time, we, the people should do background checks and screen out who we elect for any kind of governmental position before these wacky, silly laws are created. First sexism, then racism, and now "weightism"? ::sigh:: At times like these i'm starting to think that there is no such a thing as the "sign of the times" anymore.

My boyfriend and I have been discussing a similar law that has been on the books for years and which still remains in some states. There is a law that states that ugly people and people with gross deformities may not come out of their homes to "mingle with the populace" until after dark has come. As we have agreed this is agreigous that they would arbitrarily discriminate against someone with an illness. If their obesity is caused by a hormonal or physcal malady or even if it is the emotional and mental disorder known as morbid obesity you cannot discriminate against people with disabilities like that. The American's with disabilities organization should be all over this one, and I find it difficult to believe that such a measure will pass. Here is where I find the problem; Who is the final arbiter of who is fat, or who is ugly? If they can actually get such legislation to pass then there will have to be someone to police the proper enforcement of the law. Also if such a law passes it will be only a matter of time before they start going after other people with disabilities, or physical malformities. Eventually it will come down to making it against the law to serve blacks, or Italians or anyone with brown skin or white skin or whatever. This is truly a sad day in the "home of the free, and the land of the brave"! As Metallica said back in the eighties. "Freedom, a choice that's made for you my friend, freedom a speech, just words that they wil bend. Freedom with their exeptions."

I don't knwo where are you from, but I guess usa, since you have american flag background in your avatar. i don't feel like usa is such a free country even the people are saying that. there are many things I feel liek discirimating about, since I am european living in usa. And this information what you share with us, is just crazy and i think the restaurants would only loose customers. there should be other things how usa should fight with obese, stop commercials about all this fast fat food and more comercials about exercising and healthy livestyle and they should stop to put hormones and all that crap to our food, that will actually help a lot of people. Even obese people need to eat, they cannot starve, they just need to find what is healthy for them and what is not. I am 120 pound girl, consider like skinny, but still won't punish obese people.

To answer your question- this country is of course not really free. But now the government has OFFICIALLY lost it. This is the funniest joke of a law that I have ever heard about. This can't even be serious. If it is, this country is definitely a bigger joke than I thought in their laws...

I think that what they are doing is wrong and you can't deny people food from a restaurant no matter how big they are, that's like saying you can't breathe the air in a certain area cause you will use it all up.

Well there are alot of obese people in my area so I think alot of restaurants would go under if they passed this. This is crazy. Everybody has to eat. If you are gonna make a law then require that the restaurants offer some healthy menu items. Most do that anyway. It just doesn't make any sense. As someone said health conditions and certain meds can cause obesity. I know from experience that antidepressants cause extreme weight gain in some people. All they need is to be refused service because of their weight. Geez, what are these people thinking?!

This is insane and going to get overturned in vourt ig it even passes ever. Do restaurants get to judge if you're obese? Because I bet obese in LA is different than obeses in Massachusetts! I'd love a bill number on this!

This was on another discussion I replied to about one hour ago. I totally agree that it is a ridiculous bill. How can legislators even consider discriminating against obese people. Some people are obese through no fault of their own, such as genetics, health issues or medication.

Our freedom is being taken away slowly but surely.I feel like you, this is a crazy bill an should be protested if this passes.Your also right about this being discrimination,Some people do have a medical condition an gainingg weight cannot be helped. The govement need to pass other bills instead of worrying about peoples weight.Hve you heard anything about what the resturant thoughts are on this matter? If so let me know their thoughts..

OMG! the resteraunts will be loosing most of their business if that were to happen wouldnt they ? I think that is discrimination.. After all, If obese people want to eat, they will eat, weather its at a resteraunt or at their homes, I say educate not discriminate. Hey look, i'd be a pretty good protester! i can rhyme! *chants* educate not discriminate! educate not discriminate! educate not discriminate! *chants* I live in canada and when i've needed on occasion to go to a food bank, i've seen obese people there!! so here. . hell we help obese people get obese. Now what reason would an obese person have for needing to go to a darn food bank! they OBVIOUSLY have food!! heheh oh my. to each their own!

I am large boned, and stocky and considered overweight, so what am I going to do is we decide to drive through the States? We have to eat. Why is there not an incentive to have the restaurants give more healthy choices? Give them a discount or a one month a year tax free if they offer diabetic, low-calories or low-carbs on their menu as well as the usual meals for seniors? I It is dangerous for obese people to eat at home with all the temptations there and is it not just as bad that the only place they could get something to eat is at convenience stores and grocers where there are those shelves filled with chips, and not to mention those boxes of cookies and Ding dongs?

This is just another crazy way the government is trying to control things. Maybe they should work on regulating what the restuarants are serving and the portion sizes if they want people to be healthier. I mean who is going to be the judge and tell these people "Oh you're too fat to eat here".

I am with you, start commercials for healthy food and quit aiming junk towards the kids. Start education programs. Give incentives for restaurants to start offering smaller portions as an option.
