I can't sing! Can you?

I watch in horror as people go on the stage at American Idol and just kill a song. Sometimes I recognize the words but not the tune. Some people you can't help laugh at. I was in fifth grade when the choir teacher told me I couldn't hold a tune. Undaunted I went on to play trumpet for five years. Turns out not only can I not sing I seem to have no rhythm in my soul! I sometimes feel like Steve Martin in the Jerk. Over my life I have realized I am one of those people that can't sing or dance! Can you sing or are you one of those people like me that should never audition for American Idol?

I have been told that I sound like a sick cow when I sing, but I do it anyway. I think there is something pleasing about the sounds cows make. And it is too much fun to do to give up just because somebody else wants to get all critical and judgmental. Tough. I'm having fun and that's all that counts in my book. And anyway, my pets appreciate my singing. So there.

Well, I do have a couple of buns that a few men have tried to stick their fresh meat between. It depends on my mood whether I let them or not, and then only if they use plenty of vasoline and no ketchup.

You will NEVER catch me on Canadian/American Idol, because I sound terrible! I don't even sing outloud in public. When songs I like play I mouth along to the words because I don't want to hurt anyone's ears. My boyfriend is a musician and singer who seems to think that anyone can do this but I'm not so sure.

My hubby is a musician too and he tried to teach me to play guitar and realized it was a fruitless effort as I couldn't keep time. I don't sing in public either, I won't even sing Happy Birthday to friends! I'm glad I'm not alone.

I dread happy birthday moments, I just kind of mouth along and hope no one notices for the most part. I think the boyfriend would probably love it if I played guitar, but I just don't have the coordination for it if nothing else. I won't even touch guitar hero when there is anyone around because I'm too embarrassed. He was shocked to find out that I had been playing for a bit because I always did it when he was out of the house.

Other than Happy Birthday my other thing I really hate is when at a sporting event everyone stands up for the national anthem and I just stand there looking like an unpatriotic oaf!

I actually feel bad for those singers that do bad on american idol. For one thing they probally practice for years but no one told them they were bad. Then to be humliated on national tv by simon espically thats why I wouldnt go on american idol. Even though I can sing good at times. If I get nervous which I probally would do I would choke up and be scratchy

I think that some of the contestants can sing but nerves take over and with no back up music it must destroy many people's talent. You are lucky to be able to carry a tune.

I love my voice. Too bad nobody else does. I can carry a tune and even have the guts to sing karaoke on occasion. I have had the guts to sing karaoke after realizing I'm not the only one who's got an average voice.

I think Karaoke would be a lot of fun but only in the privacy of my own house, I'd feel bad to clear a whole bar out.

LOL -- funny you would mention clearing out a bar. Last time I was karaoking at a pizza place. I had a lot of trouble singing a Willy Nelson song and had to stop, change octave, ask the DJ to change the starting note...it was BAD! When it was over, I said "Thank you for not leaving."

I can sing, if its my types of songs and I am just singing along but otherwise if there isnt any music playing while I sing then it sounds like I am a bullfrog or something. The prob is my voice is to low and deep hehe. See ya around!

I don't think I can sing either. When I was 10 or something I had to sing in front of my class and it was a disaster. Since that I avoid singing in front of other people though I like singing. Now I only do it alone or when I'm drunk;)

I was kicked out of the school choir when I was about 10 and I was shattered, now I too sing only when I am drunk or alone driving in my car.

I've watched the show a couple of times and especially during the screening stage, I wonder how some people can go up there so confidently when they obviously cannot sing! I don't profess to be a great singer....but I can sing a bit ...better than those...but I still wouldn't audition because I know I'm not really good enough! My experience has been different than yours. I tried to learn to sing when I was in 5th grade and the teacher said that I couldn't hold a tune....and I totally gave up! It was another 10 years and a couple of years of listening to my sister that I realized that I could actually sing! By then I started learning and it was a little too late to take it up as a full hobby. But I plan to get back to learning (atleast) in a couple of years from now.

I too am one of those who should never consider auditioning for American Idol. I can't sing and Iknow that I can't sing. I am convinced that many who try out on American Idol do so just for a chance to be on TV. They know full well that their audition will be one of those that is shown for the viewers to get a good laugh. Granted, there are a few who genuinely feel that they can sing and who are shot down by the judges, you can see the disappointment on their faces. But many of those horrible ones actually smile and laugh as they leave.

Well...I actually can sing and dance. I was quite shy in grade school so no way would I actually sing in music class. Besides, Miss Senese (teacher) was a mean witch and quite discouraging to people in the class. So I waited until freshmen year to show off. I sounded like Pat Benetar, and her first album is what I practiced to. I first opened my mouth in front of a group for the school play. It was all good from there. Joined a rock band that had to sneak me in the back doors of bars. I loved being up on stage with a group. I did this for a while, but the money was lame. By the time you pay the roadies, etc. you get little money for a 2 hour show. I got recruited by a manger that was into the 90's Chicago dance music and auditioned for the female part of a song that would be on a 12 inch dance mix record. From there I got a record contract. Some of my songs were played at clubs and on B96 FM in Chicago. Unfortunately, the owner of the record company was a coke head that was cheating all the artisits by sending our music overseas and keeping all the profits, all without our knowledge. Germany and Japan fell in love with one dance mix I was on and I could have toured Europe. This jerk also cheated on the taxes so the Feds came and took everything and shut it down. I can't forget to mention the scumbags that try to get you to sleep with them and promise you the moon. EW! I stood up to this guy and then he tried telling every producer that I was "Difficult to work with"...needless to say I decided not to go further into underworld of the music business. I did shows, signed autographs, entered dance and singing contests and made lots of moolah. I was born at the wrong time because I could have tried out for Idol and So you think you can dance...bummer. Now I don't meet the age requirements.

It is a shame that their are such crooks out there. But at least you have a lot of good memories to go with the bad taste this guy left in your mouth. I really think that they should have a senior idol since there is so much untapped talent out there.

I love how all the responses here are those of us who know we would scare the judges. Where are these thousands of people each year who go to Idol try-outs thinking they're great? Not to mention the probable millions of others who want to try-out but haven't made it to an audition. One of the other responders here nailed it when they wrote about some people never being told how bad they are. Some are even praised so much by friends and family that they believe they cannot fail. Whatever happened to honest feedback? It seems indicative of something wrong with our society that Simon Cowell's assessments shocked so many people, contestants and audience alike. Has political-correctness and positive emotional reinforcement driven honesty to all time lows? I don't know, I've gone off on a rant, haven't I? Well, the simple answer is I cannot sing to any point pleasing to others. Heck, I don't write too well, either, but, unfortunately for all, I keep doing both!

I think Simon is refreshing in his honesty. I think if we had more Simons in the world we would have much more talent being used and not so much horrible middle of the road music on the airwaves.

I can carry a tune, but I miss about 1 note in 5, so I should never be on American Idol, even if I WERE stupid enough to be interested in trying!

I can sing a little, though I can't hit the high notes! LOL I'm too old to try out for American Idol, but even when I wasn't a few years ago, I knew better than to try out! I already know my singing voice is not good enough without having a judge (or three) telling me so. So, I'll just stick to singing along with the car radio and when I can my karaoke machine. That is good enough for me. :)

Oh well... I can sing songs... but just in the confine of my bedroom or at the bathroom... hehehe. I am really a music lover, I want to listen to songs and music but I think I dont have the talent of singing very well like others do. During my elementary school days, my music teacher encouraged me to play guitar, which I gladly learned to play and I became a member of a choir as a guitarist. But now I hardly touch a guitar. Like you, I also sometimes laugh at those who auditions for American Idol, coz I think some are weird and really out of tune. But I admire them for having a big self confidence to audition, of which I don't have...:D

I don't think I could go up on American Idol. I can sing good but I get all nervous especially when I have to sing higher notes. I can sing in front of strangers if I'm in a group but not by myself. I don't know how some of the people on American Idol can go up there. Sure its sometimes funny for the people watching but I'd be way to embarrassed to sing up there especially if I sounded like I have nasal congestion or something. :P

I can sing, but not according to American or Canadian Idol's standard. I am a classical singer, and they prefer popular singers. I am also a bit too old for them, being almost 65. I do practice a lot, and I used to sing off key and kept my mouth closed too tightly because I was always afraid of someone telling me, :"STOP SHOUTING!" but am better now, but I would never want to try out for any of the Idol shows unless they allow classical singers who are over sixty and who do not sound like frogs.

Of course I can sing...just only in the car by myself haha. No one wants to hear me sing. I truly can't believe that some of those folks on American Idol believe they can sing. Surely someone would have told them along the line that they are tone deaf? How could their friends let them go on to humiliate themselves. Although sometimes I think they're going on just to get on tv. Now here's a confession - I'm so tone deaf and have no rhythm - I can't even clap right along with the crowd hah..Whit
