Loud Music

Canada
March 5, 2008 6:21am CST
I live in "rural residential" on 3 acres. Yesterday the sun was shining, and I wanted to enjoy my gardening. Recently both houses, have sold. The music was soooo loud, coming from both homes, it was like a battle of the bands. It absolutely ruined the peace, tranquility of the day. Each was a different form of music. I was annoyed, as it was a disturbing cacophony of sounds that I didn't enjoy! I felt that they were both rude. What about my choice of music? Like listening to the sounds of spring...the birds, the bees? It really grated on my nerves, so I ended up coming inside, and shutting out spring. I never have my music loud enough to travel, if I wish to listen to it louder I use ear phones. Am I reasonable...or not?

If it is something they only do once in a while... I guess you have to accept it. If they do it everyday... you are in trouble... because there is next to nothing you can do about it. Except get in bigger trouble by picking up a fight with them. When people spend big money on an Hi-Fi... you have to expect that they are going to use it. Unfortunately... you cannot pick and choose your neighbours. It is the luck of the draw. Cannot help you. Sorry.

What do you think this is? The Wild west? There are no laws against playing loud music during the day. But there surely are laws against throwing stones on roof and in windows. Don't get caught? In a rural aera? On a 3 acres plot? lol All he can do is to ask them politely to restrain the volume of their music. Or he can start a war by moving his lawn at 7AM on weekend and wake up the neighbours who are trying to sleep in. But once a war is started... it will never end.

It tends to be a rude awakening I have lived on this property for 28 years, and hopefully, bought 3 acres so that I could enjoy peace, and tranquility, which I have had for a good portion of my time, so am thankful for that. Had thought others purchased in "rural residential" for the same reasons. I am a lover, not a fighter, so will have to come up with some really creative way to tone this down. I do not want to start a neighbour war! I guess it is a sign of the times, when you don't respect the privacy of others!Or the music choice.

I think you are very reasonable. I would get pissed off if my neighoubr would do that. I would sask politely to lower their volume. Up till now I always have been blessed to have reasonable and educated neighbours. We tried to be understanding of each other and kept noise to a minimum.

Lthank you for responding to this age old discussion! Thank goodness, it is winter and she doesn't have her retreats....She is a leader of a group called "communitas"....and has 4-5 day long gatherings, and part of that is "drums"that must be beaten 24 hours during this retreat! It is a strange group, as they sacrificed one of their new "goat kids," and had some kind of dance and celebration! This all happens in a field, right smack next to me...that is totally visible out of my living room/bedroom window! I love my summers, but do not miss this intolerable noise....these drums are beat in such a manner that it is totally annoying! Sorry for ranting...so am not looking forward to summer!

I know how you feel, I hate loud music. I realize sometimes people like to have their music on on a nice day while they are washing their car and that's cool, we like ours on when we are in the pool, but it's only for a couple of hours. I hate it when music is blasted for hours and really late at night!

Your welcome Perg and I hope your day sparkles also lol. I hate that boom boom boom too, it's so annoying. We had these mexicans living a few streets over that would play their Mexican music very loud every day. We went for a walk trying to find where it came from, when we finally did, we called the police to get them to turn it down. God, I hate Mexican music now lol. They finally moved now the area is nice and quiet!

Sorry to hear that you had to move to find peace & quiet! That's not me, tho, my girl, I am planted here (28 years on this property.) So, today, is the day that I have to take the bull by the horns, and try the nice approach. Here's a good one for you, I have 2 tenants, and they came yesterday & complained, and one of them is a musician! Even my neighbor who'se further away from this "din" of musical force brought it up to me yesterday. It's gonna be a challenge...but I'll keep you posted! Thanks for your encouragement & support. Smiles to you!

Hear..hear! What is it today, that the volume of the music must be so loud! Realistically to me it becomes noise, at this level....you can't hear the words, and just the bass going boom...boom...boom. I have absolutely no objections to people enjoying their own outdoors, and hearing background music. If you were my neighbour, I am sure you would keep your volume to a non-invasive level. But I am plunk in the middle of 3 acres, and I can still FEEL the bass inside my house. It just wrecks my thots when I go outside....the place I love most. Thanks, catjane, have a sparkling day!

You poor soul, I feel for you, because you feel like your personal world has been invaded....your home is supposed to be your sanctuary, your tranquility. And now, it is a source of frustration. I hope your neighbor's will come to their senses, as I know how this strains your every waking moments. You do not want to create a bigger problem, but as I said before...I will have to tackle my problem today. I hope you find peace soon!

You are being reasonable and considerate. Understand that the people that blare their music are not intentionally being rude & probly are clueless to how much it bothers you. they love it and are enjoying it, oblivious to your frustration. You need to let them know. If they are decent people, they will make sure to turn down their music. most people don't intentionly bother others....sometimes they just don't know.

You are so right sid556! But what has this world come to when you have to ask absolutely mature people to show respect, and consideration. I have lived here for 28 years...I am a landscaper, tiler by trade, and I will never even run my equipment b4 noon on weekends, 10 on weekdays....and NEVER after 4 pm...cause people may be outside bbqing. As asked b4, are these people buying in "rural residential" because there are many ordinances they have to live by in the City.

Thanks...my dear! Today is the day, it has gone on for nearly two weeks now, and my tenants, and my neighbor on the other side is getting up in arms. I will make the first step, talk to them politely. If no avail, we will join hands as a group, and inform them it's disrupting the neighborhood. Thanks for you help. Smiles.

I really think they just don't know. I have friends that are in a band and were shocked when a neighbor complained about their music. I like their music...its good and took their side. One night, I did happen to be driving by and I could hear their music quite aways away in my car with the windows rolled up. I pulled up closer and could hear exactly what the neighbor was complaining about. Really at that distance it was just annoying noise and not music. I grabbed one of the guys and had him listen to it as the neighbor did. This case was about to be taken to court. He agreed. None of them were out to bother others....just wanted to play their music. They put up insulation which helped muffle the sound and became more considerate of the times in which they played. The case was settled out of court. The neighbor, like you, did not want to infringe on their rights but still she had rights. I really feel that if you talk to your neighbors openly that you will get results.

Hello Pergammano! I think you are being very reasonable, and I don't blame you for your frustrations. Three acres isn't small at all, so it's not like they were right next door to you. I think it was very rude and inconsiderate on their part. I too like the sounds of spring, especially the birds. I am sorry to hear yours was ruined.

I am so like you, especially in spring...just the sounds of spring is music enough for my ears. I have spent a lot of time gearing my property to outside enjoyment. I have built a waterfall & pond, and two outdoor fire pits with surrounding comfort areas....these are now rendered unenjoyable from sound contamination. I am trying to creatively resolve this, because I am more of a pacifist than my son, whom will be home for holidays, soon...and because he lives in the City, he loves to come home, just for this ambience. I am afraid that he won't handle this matter as diplomatically as me! LOL! Don't want him to start a war and leave me to fight it! Thanks! Have a sparkling day, Chey1970!

Me and my husband built a waterfall/pond that houses gold fish. In the spring/summer time, we enjoy sitting out there, and listening to the water, along with watching the fish swim. While doing this, we also listen and watch the humming birds. So I know exactly what you mean. I guess I would be more like your son, and take great offense to it. But I also understand, it's not a battle you want to fight. Hopefully you can come to some kind of conclusion to remedy the problem. I wish you luck. Have a blessed day. *smiling*

Thanks Chey1970! It seems to me we get so little time to grasp the beauty of nature, and enjoy our creations, like our ponds, too! It seems we can turn music on any day, any time.....but we have to grab those other moments when we can! Spring is such a fleeting time. I am not that old witch, next door...I really believe in "live & let live", but I do realize that I will have to take this matter in hand. Yesterday, my quiet neighbour, on the other side, came over, as he always brings the Sunday newspaper (I love the crosswords in it)and he said "seems likethe neighborhood has gone for a s***!" It's bad enuff at our house, but it seems like it's right in your yard." We have just had 4 days of sunshine, clouded over with loud music....so today, I must deal with it. Wish me luck. Thanks for your support! I will try kindness first. Cheers!

I hear you, but, it still galls me that these are mature people, shouldn't they have respect and consideration. Why should I have to play "old bat" and run neighborhood patrol, what happened to "live and let live." We are not talking loud music....we are talking LOUD music that travels an acre and a half away! I am smack dab in the middle of my 3 acres...and I hear/feel the bass boom inside my home! Have a great one no_chao!

Loud music is tolerable as long as there are no complaints from the others. I love loud music it boost up my energy level and keeps me going ..but if i know they are intimidated with the noise I make sure i have my earpiece with me ..

Do what you want on your own space.....but loud music should be kept within your own perameters. What you choose to listen to may not be what others should be subjected too! Each, all, should be able to the kind of enjoyment they choose! Thank you, so kindly, for being considerate enough to wear your ear phones when you wish to listen to loud music. Noise pollution does affect everyone...and that's why I'm "just making ends meet" to keep my property. Just so I didn't have to be subject to this inconsideration. Have a great day...ayou82.

As long as it was before 9 oclock at night it was fine:) I love loud music. And i understand some people dont like my choice of msuic thats why i wont have it up like that all day everyday but once in awhile isnt ganan harm anyone as long as its not at night waking people kids or keeping them awake.

I do not agree with you...noise polluion is noise pollution..and it can be mentally/emotionally destructive. You are disrupting someone else's world! What gives you the right? Lack of respect for others? If I were the fight fire with fire type of person, I would just buy a bigger & better sound system than you, and force you to listen to my type of music. And that would harm you! Respect is so important in this world...and we all should be meting it out! Cheers.

I think both the neighbours are on competition with each other in sounds. You should tell your neighbours not to play loudly as it disturbs the whole neighborhood. If they still do not listen you could make a complaint.I you are quiet you could put earcovers to avoid maximum of the sound.

YOU must be out in my yard with me! LOL! As I said earlier, it is like the "battle of the bands"....can't ascertain, one kind from the other. I did go outside yesterday, but wore ear plugs..and really missed out on the miracles of spring. I am wracking my brain for a creative way to complain. Thanks for your help.

those kind of people were undisciplined, they never think of others but only themeselves, if they live here in my place, all their windows will be broken from stones thrown from their neighbors. I my self hate loud music it simply disturbs my concentrations on things I have to do or finish. that is why I only played soft and undisturbing sounds. If they still do that throw a stone at their roof. they will stop doing it for sure, or rather go to their house and talk to them ask them to lower their sounds volume, if they did not comply try my first suggestion.

It's amazing how things change. One year ago I wouldn't be complaining. I am with you, loud music (especially not my choice) is very nerve-grating. You are right, I am NOT going outside, where I usually go to clear my thoughts, and put all "my ducks in a row." Now, I just get angry. I do not want to start a revolution! I just wonder what has happened in this world that respect is gone. Now I am wondering, did they buy in "rural residential" for the purpose of blasting loud music, 'cause it isn't aloud in organized territories, where ordinances against this kind of thing are in place. Have a great one....omar0913!
