Many people are now thinking about getting more exercise into their routines and many choose to make little changes that make a differences, when you are in large buildings do you take the elevators or choose the stairs? when you are in a mall or metro, subway, do you take the escalators or take the stairs for good health? If you don't why not?

I don't like lifts or elevators, they scare me, I always fear they are going to break down if I get in them and I get claustophobic. I guess seeing films where lifts break down hasn't helped. I much prefer to use the stairs, I actually get funny looks and comments if I go into a business building and ask where the stairs are when I need to be told what floor I have to go to, straight away the guard or reception will say take the lift to the third floor and I will say where's the stairs!

yes lots of people do not like elevators, I don't care for them much either but with my bad knees I cannot do the stairs.

If my time allows me I prefer to be climbing the stairs as my exercise too! Since our house has no stairs so this is a great opportunity already for me to have a free healthy exercise.lol, but, If I have an appointment and need to got there on time I would choose the other options mentioned!

Hey winterose, I guess that would all depend on a few things like if I was in a hurry or if my knees could handle it that day and not bothering me. If things are a go I will take the stairs first. I hate elevators really and all those shows you watch about the cable breaking and people dying or it stopping and gettting stuff for no tellong how long, just does not make me feel comfortable in them at all. So the stairs is my choice. Do I do it for health? No, more for peace of mind.

I have bad knees from arthritis so walking up and down stairs is so painful. So when ever I get the chance I will take the escalators or the stairs. I wished my knees started hurting before we bought our home, I would have gotten a one story instead of a two. I know it's healthy to take the stairs, I just wish my knees would let me. Every time I take a step upward or downward, it feels like a rubber band that's about to snap. What really stinks about this is I'm only 31 years old.

I think my knees is part of my fibromyalgia. I read that it also plays a part with the ligments. Mine started to bug me when we moved to Nashville, TN. We moved to an apartment on the 2nd floor so I delt with stairs. It didn't get worse until we bought the 2 story home. They don't hurt all the time, just when there is moisture in the air. After last year's dry spell, I rather deal with the pain, than having everything outside die.

I see that you get quite a bit of exercise just by working alone

No matter where I am I always take the stairs. I have a girlfriend that lives in a high rise apartment block and she lives on the 18th floor and I usually take the stairs when I visit her, instead of taking the elevator, unless I am too tired or carrying something heavy to her place. When I am shopping I always take the stairs instead of the escalator. When we went to a hockey game a couple weeks ago I took the stairs while my husband took the escalator. When I go to the airport I will take the escalator while I am carrying heavy suitcases but as soon as I have them checked in I will take the stairs instead.

It totally depends on where I am. If I’m at the mall—I park in the back of the lot and always take the stairs instead of the elevators or escalators. Just makes more sense to me—Get that exercise in. I even do this when I have a lot of packages (bags)- better exercise. If I’m somewhere where I don’t go often and am unsure of the area—I will take the elevator. Just a safety thing. I have to feel safe before I’d take the stairs – or park further back in the lot.

I like to walk so I go to the mall and when coming on the escalar I pass it by to use the stairs. It is good exercise and I try to get as much as I can. Same when it comes to elevators. I would rather take the stairs. Only in the case of the elevators I have another reason also. I don't like to be inclosed spaces. I am always afraid the thing is going to get stuck and then I would freak out.

if I only have one or two flights to ascend I might take the stairs - I do not like holding on to the railings though, they seem so dirty to me. . . so if I have my children with me we are more apt to take the elevator up flights.... I do like to walk down flights, not sure how much good that does as far as cardio vascular improvement, but it does get my joints and muscles owrking somewhat.

I like to take the stairs and walk, because I don't do any exercising and try to do a little extra walking when possible. Now, if I'm carrying a lot of stuff or have my kids with me, I will usually take the escalator or elevator because it's easier.

since two years ago when a broken shoulder and a shoulder joint replacement of steel and plastic left me with a almost useless left arm I have used a quad cane to get around. that means I can no longer use the escalator as I am carrying the dumb cane so I have to use the elevator instead or climb stsirs which is hard for me to do.

Hi Rose..i go via the stairs..im not into the lifts too much...but i dont min the escalators at all....the only time that i would avoid the escaltors is if they were jam packed. When my daughter was a child ..she was petrified of escalators...and we used to have to chase all around the shops to find the stairways!!! She isnt too bad now..and will use them at a push!!

When I feel strong, I always climb the stairs. When I have free time, I take escalator to see everybody doing or see the things I want to buy. And when I don't have a free time and don't feel strong, I take the elevator. Almost I usually take escalators.

For me, I have timing allocated for exercise. In the places mentioned, I take either the escalators or the lift/elevators. It is more convenient as my hands are often full. I do not climb for the sake of some exercise.

Hi there... No I always prefer to take the stairs or the long way around things. After all I have a great healthy pair of legs and it will do them no harm to take the stairs or the long way around, I enjoy it anyway. The elevators way too boring for me. Have a great day...

It depends on how many flights of stairs there are. I have asthma and too many stairs is pretty hard on me so I'll take the escalator.

This all depends on who I am with, if I am on my own and have no pushchair with me I will take the stairs every time, half the time it is quicker than waiting to get in a lift! But if I have the children with me and the pushchair I have to go in the lift because the children love to go on them and its easier for me with the pushchair!
