A big Stomach at forty poses dangers,

Now I am a person who wants to be known as rather intelligent, I do not like making stupid mistakes, I want to be smart, and when I see stories about Alzheimer, I wonder what could prevent this so I read something that if you have a big stomach in your forties, that scared that he!! out of me. Twenty-five years ago, we did not know the danger of trans fat and most people, unless you were rich or lived in the country, or did not use margarine, would have gained weight. Now we are healthier, and yet when one remembers what one ate then. So not only do we have to put up with hardening of the arteries, danger of strokes, but now danger of forgetting who you are, where you were, your family, being reduced to below the level of a child and I do not mean that in a good way. Now had I been a smoker, I could have stopped smoking and my lungs would have repaired itself, but with all that excess fat around the middle at forty? I have not checked my old photographs of twenty-five years ago, but when my mother-in-law was alive and we visited her and I was in her bathroom that had mirrored showers, looking at me scared me. So how many of us who were around twenty-five years ago will wake up one day and not know who we are?

I do not think a big middle has anything to do with Alzheimers..I think it can either be in the genes or someone who has not kept their mind active...I think reading, learning and broading your mind, feeding your mind will keep your mind active..From as long as i can remember it has always been told that the body is a machine and we have to do upkeep on it...I am not an expert and i surely do not want alzheimers but i think if you eat healthly and keep your mind active and continue to learn, that your mind will stay good....I also feel it runs in families.....I know a family that has several people that are in their family that has alzheimers,so i really feel that has something to do with it...So far no one in my family on either side has anyone with alzheimers....

Alzheimers does not run in our family, but we are all large boned. I mean it is not fatty tissue covering our bones, our bones are large in the first place. It is easy for someone who is small boned or medium boned to lose weight, but the only way we large boned people are gong to be slim is if someone had scraped down our bones or if we had not drunk so much milk and had all that cheese when we were young. Then we would have another problem. I often wonder about those shows where the teacher gets alzeimers, you would think it would happen to someone n the working class.

Well I did not know that tummy fat was somehow related to Alzheimer’s but it definitely is a very scary disease. I know it coz my mom is gradually heading towards it and the worse part is that she wont acknowledge or take any medical help. She has become extremely forgetful and its making her easily irritable and life is in a complete mess right now. anyway, I would never want to be in her shoes, but I am such a big foodie. It’s the only love of my life. I have given up ice-creams and chocolates and soft drinks and pastries and generally all those yummy food. Well I do take them, but in moderation. Even then there is no hope that I will ever lose those tyres around my belly except for rigorous exercise which I am too lazy to do. I hope its not hereditary! But belly fat has other bad effects too, specially on our knees and I am feeling them give in quite often now. so it is a cause of concern for me and I am trying to shed a few pounds too.

I do hope that for your sake it is not heriditary, but with tummy fat, it is rather scarey since that is the hardest fat to get rid of. I have skinny legs, but a roll at the bottom part of my stomach that I cannot get rid of. I could if I ran very fast, but I have bad knees. I find it hard to lose weight and I fear the only way is for me to take some of that slimquick that costs $30 or so a box and that is too much for now.

I just got the one with the Hoodia in it. I just need an appetite suppressant and it does not contain the stuff in the other pills I took that made me sick.

I just did a discussion similar to this myself. The article I read said that if you lose the weight, you can decrease the risk. It wasn't clear about if you lose the weight in your 50's or older, if it makes a big difference. I'm losing weight now, but well past my forties. Maybe I can at least prevent anything further? I would like to hope so.

The trouble is it did not say if you lost the weight, the risks will go away. It sounded as if "if you gain stomach fat in your forties, you are doomed doomed ha ha ! (evil laugh) it does not matter if you lose the weight in your fifties, sixties, you are still doomed! (another evil laugh). It sounded as if 40 was the decade that mattered It was rather discouraging.

I refuse to admit losing this stomach won't help. I'm sure if I look hard enough I can find a study to support the fat loss even in my 50's. I love your evil laughter

I am working hard to avoid that. I am going to get my tummy flat if it kills me. I am dieting and working out. Hoping to have a flat tummy by my next birthday.

I am doing sit ups and crunches and lots of walking, but I heard you have to do some really physical exercises and I cannot run that fast for long.

If I don't get rid of the fat around my middle soon, I don't think I want to know who I am! Lol! (Sorry, I get silly when I'm tired.) I'd like to look in the mirror and say "Who's that fat person in my room? I'm glad I don't look like her!" Lol.

I am stocky all over. I was thinking of squeezing myself in a very small closet or getting inside a vise.

Wow, I must've been tired when I made that comment. I don't even remember saying that! I just got an email today saying my response has been commented on, and I saw the subject was about big stomaches and I said "Huh!??" Lol. Oh well, at least I'm funny when I'm tired.

And it sure does not help when you are short. I rather envy the taller people, there is more places, but all our fat is concentrated right in the middle where it does not do any good.

I did not have a big stomach at 40 years of age but in my 50's I was very chunky now I am down to my ideal weight but still have a loose stomach as the muscle are no longer taut. However what scare the hell out of me is what to believe in all the latest medical breakthroughs as in the past 10 to 15 years they discovers something is become the latest big news and then a few years later someone else comes along and disproves the theory. In other words I take all the latest news with a grain of salt and anyway what can anyone do about the past if you are over 40? I just do my daily crossword puzzle and keep my brain as active as possble.

I get annoyed that all this "oh you are in danger!!" information comes out after the damage has been done, as if they were saying, "ha ha, you do not have the gift of prophecy, so only those who were able to foretell what would be bad for you are very happy in that they have nothing to worry about, thy will live with their minds intact until they die at ninety plus! No one can predict the future and it sure is not fair when we could have done something about it at the time, but not one of the medical community thought we were numerous enough or important enough to find out. Like those who were encouraged to smoke during World War II and now they say "Oops!"

Well I seem to be in big trouble here...lol I am going to be 48 in June and carry all my weight right in the belly... yikes. I have lost over 100 lbs in the past year but still need to lose almost another 100 to be a good weight. I may lose my mind by 50...lol I hope not. It is scary though, too bad we didn't know then what we know now... Blessed Be, Mari

I had a large stomach when I was in my forties, part of it due to an operation I had in my twenties that took out part of my stomach muscle. It was a D & C and that time, it was not like now when they come from underneath. Also the pills the doctor subscribed to regulate my periods at that time, caused me to gain weight. So my stomach muscles have been weak and easy to gain there. In fact, I am fatter from below my rib cage to the top of my legs. And that makes me worried, because I look something like a big ball on skinny legs. I have gotten a little better but I do hope it is not too late like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped.

I have a bigger stomach since having my daughter and it gets bigger and will not go away. I heard that fat around the midsection can also cause cancer too. I am 36 now and I am so scared of what my health will be in the coming years because I do not have time to take care of myself like I used to.

I had not heard about having a big tummy being a factor in later onset of Alzheimers but I do know it's definitely an issue where diabetes is concerned, I know from personal experience and from many others that I know who have diabetes! If I'd known that years ago, I'd have done something about it, I only ever heard that beign overweight meant you could have health problems later in life such as heart related, etc, but no one specifically said I could end up being diabetic or I would have got up off my fat backside and done something about it whilst I still could! Ho hum...

I was all right until the doctor said I needed the birth control pill to regulate my periods. I was very irregular. Then there was the d * c and the operations to remove the ovarian cysts, so part of my problem was medical. And gained weight like crazy. I did do a lot of walking but not that energetic run for thirty minutes a day exercise and of course the cheap margarine with the trans fat did not help much. I guess everything was against us. And I do not have diabetes.

oh my...you are scaring me. I have always been underweight and even now at 51, I wear a size 3 or 4. still my belly is there....it always has been an issue with me and always will be. even at my tiniest....the belly was there. So far I remember who I am and all but you are really really scaring me. My mom just passed and she was not in her right mind and dealing with her daily has left me really pondering this stuff....don't want to be that.
