Really Did you Say 8 Glasses of Water a day?

Got Water? - 8 glasses of water a day
United States
April 2, 2008 6:04pm CST
I was just listening to the nightly news and, Brian Williams said there was a new study out that said that there is no evidence that healthy people needed 8 glasses of water a day. The evidence did show that your body would let you know what it needed and for you to drink when you were thirsty. (LMAO now hows that for common sense) Then he said now that proves a point I have always said, wait long enough and there will be a new study come out that will support your WAY of life. Rotf this struck me as comical. Any thoughts? Did you hear anything funny today? Just want to share a random thought?

I have little doubt that people need 8 glasses or so of water a day, since we, like the earth we live on are comprised mostly of water. That theory though has always seemed faulty to me. The reason being is that we get water from just about everything. Not even counting all the fluids we drink, there is a lot of water in the food we eat, and that is the purpose of the stomach, to break things down into things our body can use... which includes extracting water from foods and filtering water (okay different organ here) from fluids that we drink. You are so right about studies coming out to support your lifestyle, it's just a matter of time...

I try to drink 8 glasses of water a day....water is needed to flush out toxins and keep the body properly hydrated...but who can actaully drink that much water in the run of a day!! For one, you would need to pee constantly...LOL....but seriously, water is very healthy but depending a person' size and weight and whether they already eat healthy, etc, I don't think it is absolutely necessary to get 8 glasses a day although it can't hurt if you don't mind running to bathroom all day!

And you know that is the point to, if you drink more fluids than your body needs you end up taxing your system in other ways. Why pee all day? Drink what you need and let it go. rotflmao No pun intended!

That pet figure of 8 glasses may not be required for a healthy person, some may need more and some less. Of course, it also depends on where the person lives, it is reasonable to assume that people living in colder areas would need less than those who live in hot climate. I personally think, not just by intuition but after reading other researches too, not the least of which are lectures by my wife, that body demands water when its level has already crossed the minimum required limit and it is wise to keep it a bit above that limit especially when it takes some time for the effect to take place, i.e. its addition to as blood plasma after homogenized mixing through due process. There is no challenging to the view, as yet, that healthy amounts of water in blood is essential for fluidity and proper distribution of not only the food ingredients but also the oxygen for oxidation process that gives us energy to live. In my personal experience, taking in a lot of water did help in some cases, like acne, fresher look, more energy and clean discharge in rest room, an indication of the fact that all unwanted materials are well thrown out! It's good to have some study out that support our way of life, isn't it!?:-)

Oh Kamran, You are indeed preaching to the choir now :))) as I whole heartedly agree with you. The comment the Brain Williams made just made me laugh. But you are so right about the proper balance of fluid ratio to blood plasma and red blood cells.

There was a study on the body's water requirements that the "8 glasses" quote allegedly came from-apparently,the 8 glasses thing was taken out of context-the amount refers to ALL the water the body uses durng a day...including the water taken in tea, coffee, milk, soup, used in cooking,etc...Then I was watching a programme on Desert Survival last week-they had a Guy sitting in a Sauna to check out how much water He needed to stay hydrated-a Medical consultant there stated thirst wasn't an adequate way of checking how much water you needed...if you were thirsty, you were already dehydrated.the best way was to take a drink on a regular basis..

Hello! Science, as always, will eventually change its idea. New studies will be made, and new discoveries will be made. Our way of living will be always changed. This is the fun part of living, it's never the same thing. You don't know what can happen tomorrow. Now, I don't usually drink 8 glasses of water. I use to drink some water, but I don't know if that makes 8 glasses. I guess not. Respectfully.

Hi there munhozmib, what you say is true. i found this comment he made comical.

that is somewhat true, if your body needs water bad enough you will not be satisified untill you drink enough water. I was watchin I shouldnt be Alive on Discovery channal, and this guy was lost in sea and was eating fish, well fish dont have all the nutriants we need in their meat alone, in there eyes and other places that we discard are the other nutriants we need as humans, well this guy was only eating the meat, but it never really hit the spot, after awhile in sea, he started eating all of the fish b/c for some reason his brain told him thats what he needed, i thought that was pretty weird. I rarely drink water, and I know that if i really needed water my body wouldnt be statisfied with tea or whatever else i drink. I can see how this could be a true theory

I heard that too and think the same - sooner or later they will spend a ton of time, effort and money to tell us what we already know simply from common sense. Fruits have a ton of water in them. So does things like Ice tea and coffee. Water is water. yes, you will get the other things that the beverage also has in it, but you still get the water. This told me by my doctor. However, I think it is more a study will support common sense!

I will stick with my eight glasses of water a day as that works for me and mydoctor endorses that. besides wait long enough and the opinion will swing back to eight glasses of water a day.

If it is working for you Hatley my friend I would not change a thing, besides theses researchers that conduct theses studies will once again change their minds in 2 months.

I heard this story on the news tonight also. It seems that there are tons of stories on the news lately that are just unnecessary. There is so much more worthwhile stuff going on in the world, who cares about how much water you actually need to consume? Hardly anyone goes by that anyway, and it doesn't hurt you anyway. Plus they said the amount that you do need still equals to about 6 glasses so thanks for taking two away, I'm sure that's going to help me.

you know i heard that too about the glasses of water. i tried to do that once. i gave up i only drink the amount that i feel is good enough for me. i was hungry and had a headache. people should be able to determine what is best for themselves, and set their own standard. Everybody is different.

I drink more like 12-15 glasses a day. I have no idea how people can go on just 8. Of course, I drink nothing but water and tea, so maybe that's why, the other people are getting water from those caloric beverages that they don't count as glasses of water.

the question is... how big is the glass they are referring to? there are glasses that are 200ml only but cups in fast food are more than 250ml and up to 500ml wtf! even even batista (WWE) wouldnt drink 8 500ml a day ha ha! this is just my example hehehhe
